Africa Travel: 10 Destinations and Our Guides

Africa doesn't reduce to a single trip. A long weekend in Morocco, a Tanzanian safari, a Seychelles beach break or a South African road trip are four very different experiences with distinct seasons, budgets and logistics. Our guide covers 10 field-tested destinations, sorted by sub-region.

FAQ

FAQ

Which African destination is best for a first trip? +
Morocco remains the ideal gateway to Africa for European travellers: 3-hour flight, partly francophone, mature infrastructure, and a wide range of experiences (medinas, desert, Atlas mountains, surf). South Africa works well for a first safari (Cape Town + Garden Route + Kruger), combining city and nature.
When is the best time for an African safari? +
The peak is July to October in East African parks (Tanzania, Kenya): this is the great wildebeest migration. January-February is also excellent (mini dry season, quieter parks, lower prices). In South Africa (Kruger), May to September is the best window.
How much does a safari cost? +
The average ticket for a Tanzania or Kenya safari is around €4,500 to 7,000 per person for 7 to 10 days in an all-inclusive lodge, flight from Paris included. High-end lodges (Singita, &Beyond) reach €1,000 to 2,000 per night. Budget option: mobile camps at €250 to 400 per night.
Is yellow fever vaccination required? +
Yes, mandatory to enter Kenya and Tanzania from Europe. Check your international vaccination certificate. A single injection is valid for life for most people according to WHO 2016 guidelines.
Is Africa dangerous to visit? +
The vast majority of destinations listed are rated "normal vigilance" or "heightened vigilance" by France Diplomatie. Areas to avoid: southern Tunisia (Libyan border), northern Kenya (Somali border), south-western Madagascar. Classic tourist destinations (Morocco, touristic South Africa, Seychelles, Mauritius) are safe for cautious travellers.
Which African country is the cheapest? +
Morocco and Tunisia remain the cheapest: €40 to 60 per day in comfort. Madagascar is very cheap on arrival but the flight is more expensive. Egypt runs at €40 to 70 per day in comfort, excluding high-end cruises.
Can you combine safari and beach in the same trip? +
Yes, the Tanzania (Serengeti) + Zanzibar format is field-tested and works very well over 2 weeks: 6 to 7 nights safari + 6 to 7 nights beach. Domestic flight Arusha-Zanzibar in 1h30. Same goes for Kenya + Diani Beach. This adds about €1,000 to 1,500 to the pure safari budget.
