Unmatched national park density
25% of the territory protected, 30 national parks, 6% of global biodiversity on 0.03% of Earth's surface. Manuel Antonio, Corcovado, Tortuguero, Arenal: each park has its signature.
Pura vida and ethical tourism
Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948 to invest in education and the environment. First country aiming for carbon neutrality by 2030, CST-certified ecolodges everywhere, strictly regulated wildlife sanctuaries.
The wildlife Big 4 in 10 days
Sloths at Manuel Antonio (visible from 5 meters), resplendent quetzal at Monteverde, humpback whales at Marino Ballena (July-October), green turtles nesting at Tortuguero. No other destination packs this much wildlife observation.
Polished tourism infrastructure
Paved main roads, easy 4x4 rental, American-standard ecolodges, trained naturalist guides, English widely spoken. More accessible than Peru or Brazil for a first Latin American trip.
Two oceans in six hours of driving
Pacific on the west coast (surf, jungle, sloths, golden beaches), Caribbean on the east coast (reefs, Afro-Caribbean culture, reggae, black sand beaches). Just 250 km between the two coasts.
Calendar
Tropical climate with two seasons. The dry season (December-April) is the tourist window on the Pacific coast, peaking January-March. The green season (May-November) stays pleasant in the morning with heavy afternoon showers. The Caribbean coast inverts the calendar: September-October is paradoxically the best time, while it's the rain peak in the rest of the country.

Destinations
By traveler profile
One of the best family destinations in Latin America. Visible wildlife (sloths, monkeys, toucans), kid-friendly ecolodges, short distances. Doable from age 4-5. Allow 12 days minimum.
Luxury ecolodges in the forest (Nayara Tented Camp at Arenal, Lapa Rios in Osa, El Mangroove at Papagayo), private hot springs, private wildlife observation. Budget €6,000-12,000 for 12 days.
Doable but not the cheapest in Latin America. Hostel €18-25, local meal €8-12, public bus €5-15 between cities. Plan €1,500 for 14 days excluding flights. Cheaper than Mexico on the beaches, more expensive than Colombia.
Very solo-friendly: social hostels in Tamarindo, Santa Teresa, Manuel Antonio. English everywhere. High safety. Ideal for first solo Latin America trip. Dense backpacker network between Nicaragua and Panama.
Spots for all levels: Tamarindo (school), Nosara (intermediate), Santa Teresa (all waves), Pavones (long left). Surf season: April-October on the Pacific, November-March on the Caribbean (Salsa Brava).
Corcovado (Osa) remains the densest jungle in Central America (jaguars, tapirs, scarlet macaws). Tortuguero (July-October green turtle nesting). Marino Ballena (July-October humpback whales). Local naturalist guide mandatory in the parks.
