Couples travel: 30 destinations tested by our team

Couples travel: 3-5 day escapes, 2-week stays, honeymoons. Table by budget, vibe, distance.

🔄 Updated May 22, 2026

A good couples trip depends less on the destination than on the rhythm. He wants to walk all day, she wants a terrace and a book. Or the other way around. Picking the right place means finding one that leaves room for both. We cross-reference that against our 50 destinations.

Where to go as a couple: the 30-second answer

Three scenarios cover almost every trip for two.

  • 3 to 5-day escape: Lisbon, Seville, Rome, Florence, Marrakech, Istanbul. Direct flight of 2 to 4 hours, a central hotel, you come home rested.
  • 2-week stay: Italian Tuscany-Puglia, Japan, Vietnam, Peru, Argentina. Enough to alternate cities, nature and downtime.
  • Beach for two: Sri Lanka south coast, Bali, Mauritius, Mexico Tulum. Winter sun guaranteed, water at 27-28°C.

For a romantic weekend without a flight, stay close in Europe: 90 minutes to 2.5 hours in the air, or a direct train. For a far-flung romantic destination, plan at least 10 days on the ground, or jet lag eats half the trip.

This table ranks our 12 reliable picks by profile. The vibe column says the most: a city break is nothing like two weeks among rice fields.

Our favorite for a first trip together stays Italy: everything runs by train, days revolve around meals, and one country shifts from buzzing Rome to the calm of Lake Como in a three-hour Frecciarossa ride.

How long for which type of couples trip

The classic trap: aiming too far for too few days. Here is how to match the destination to the time you have.

3 to 5-day escape

Lisbon, Seville, Rome, Florence, Naples, Athens, Istanbul, Marrakech, Venice, Krakow, Vienna, Budapest. Direct flight of 90 minutes to 4 hours, a central hotel, two or three restaurants scoped in advance and the rest improvised. This is the romantic weekend format: short, dense, no logistics.

One-week stay

Targeted Italy (Tuscany, Puglia or Sicily), Andalusia, Crete, Dalmatian Croatia, imperial Morocco, Jordan. One region, not a whole country. Seven days are enough to settle in without rushing.

Two-week stay

Japan golden route, Vietnam north-south, full Peru, Italy plus Slovenia, Morocco grand tour, Sri Lanka. Fourteen days make a long-haul trip worthwhile: jet lag clears, and there is still time to slow down.

Honeymoon (10 days to 3 weeks)

A honeymoon changes the math: you trade a higher budget for real comfort. Bali in a private-pool villa, a 5-star stay in Mauritius, Santorini facing the caldera, or the Sri Lanka plus Maldives combo. Everything is detailed on our honeymoon travel page.

How much a couples trip costs

Budget makes sense for two, Paris flight included. These 2026 ranges come from our on-the-ground price checks and test bookings.

StyleWeekend 3-4 daysTwo weeksExamples
Low budget€250-500€2,000-3,500Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Morocco
Comfort€500-1,100€3,500-6,500Italy, Japan, Spain, Jordan
Premium€1,100-2,500€8,000-18,000Mauritius, Bali villa, Tuscany luxury, Maldives

A concrete marker: the Canary Islands in January run around €250 per person for flight plus hotel on a long weekend, with 21°C in the afternoon. At the other end, two weeks in an overwater villa in the Maldives quickly tops €12,000 for two. The line that tips the budget is always the hotel, rarely the meals.

Book flights and lodging 2 to 4 months out: that is the window when fares hit their lowest. Past that point, on a beach destination in high season, prices can double.

Which romantic destination for your mood

Beach and relaxation

Sri Lanka, Bali, Mauritius, Mexico Tulum, Crete, Sardinia, Madeira. For winter sun for two without long-haul, the Canary Islands and southern Morocco hold 18 to 25°C from December to February.

Culture and cuisine

Italy, Japan, Portugal, Greece, Vietnam, Peru. The combo that works best as a couple, because a shared dinner is the easiest thing two people can do together.

Soft adventure

Morocco and the Atlas, Jordan and Wadi Rum, Vietnam and Sapa, Argentina and Patagonia, New Zealand. Plenty of walking, but a real room at night.

Pure romance

Tuscan agriturismos, a Balinese private-pool villa, sunset in Santorini, Petra by candlelight. Save these for the occasions that count.

Choosing the right couples hotel

The hotel makes 80% of a romantic destination. Our criteria, in order.

  • Double matrimonial room, not two beds pushed together Italian style. Check it explicitly when booking; the issue comes up constantly in Italy and Japan.
  • Bathroom with a bathtub: trivial elsewhere, decisive on a honeymoon.
  • Private terrace or balcony: the morning coffee and the evening drink happen there.
  • Quiet common space: a calm lobby, an uncrowded restaurant, room to stay just the two of you.
  • Breakfast with no time pressure, served late until at least 10:30 a.m.

Favor boutique hotels, agriturismos, riads and ryokans. The 400-room resorts tick every box on paper and kill the intimacy in practice.

The mistakes that ruin a trip for two

Four traps show up in nearly every piece of feedback we get.

  1. Overpacking the schedule. Five sights a day drains you and breeds tension. Build in real downtime; it often turns into the best moments.
  2. Picking a compromise destination neither of you truly wanted. Better to alternate: their choice this year, yours next time.
  3. Leaving with different budget expectations. Settle the hotel and restaurant level before booking, not on site.
  4. Locking everything in advance. Keep two or three evenings open. The best table of the trip is almost always the unplanned one.

Couples travel FAQ

Where to go as a couple far from home for the first time?

Italy, Morocco, Portugal or Greece. Direct flight, 0 to 1h jet lag, reliable climate and couples-friendly infrastructure. Shared food does the rest, with no complicated logistics for a first real trip together.

Where to go as a couple on a budget?

Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Peru, Morocco, Albania and Mexico away from the Riviera Maya. Plan €2,500-3,500 for two over two weeks in local comfort. For a weekend, the Canary Islands or Sicily start around €250 per person outside school holidays.

Where to go as a couple for winter sun?

The Canary Islands (21°C in January, 3h30 flight), southern Morocco, Mexico, Sri Lanka or Thailand in the dry season. On a tight budget, the Canaries and Morocco stay unbeatable on the sun-distance-price ratio.

Where to go as a couple for a honeymoon?

Our dedicated honeymoon travel page covers it. The top 3 tested by our team: Bali in a private villa, Mauritius in 5-star, and the Sri Lanka plus Maldives combo to mix discovery and beach.

When to go as a couple to Italy?

May-June or September-October. The climate is ideal, the sea still warm in September, and the July-August crowds are gone. Late-September harvest adds a real reason to aim for autumn in Tuscany or Piedmont.

What budget for a romantic weekend?

From €250 for two on a low-cost European city break (flight plus two nights) to €1,500 and up for an upscale boutique hotel with fine dining. The line that moves the total is the hotel, not the meals or transport.

How to avoid arguing while traveling?

Agree in advance on the daily budget, the pace (slow or intensive) and one activity chosen by each of you. Also accept having two or three tense conversations over a long trip: it is normal and it passes.
