Oceania Travel: Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands

Oceania demands commitment: 22 to 30 hours of flight from Paris, 8-to-10-hour time difference, massive internal distances. Rarely a trip under 3 weeks. Our detailed list covers 2 pillars (Australia, New Zealand) with regularly combined Pacific extensions (French Polynesia, Fiji, New Caledonia).

Long commitment, strong reward

Oceania has no truly short option. But for those who allocate the minimum 3 weeks, it's one of the most distinctive trips on the planet.

For wide open spaces

New Zealand (South Island), Australia (Outback, Tasmania, Kimberley). Near-zero population density over hundreds of km.

2

3

For surf and beach

Australia (Gold Coast, Margaret River, Bondi), New Zealand (Coromandel, Raglan).

For a culture + nature combo

New Zealand (Maori culture in Rotorua), Australia (Aboriginal sites Uluru and Kakadu).

5

Pacific extensions

French Polynesia (Bora Bora, Moorea), Fiji, Vanuatu: from Auckland or Sydney, 3 to 5 hour flights.

FAQ

FAQ

How long does an Oceania trip take? +
Minimum 2 weeks for one country in a restricted zone. Ideal 3 weeks to combine Australia + New Zealand. 4 weeks to add a Pacific extension (French Polynesia, Fiji).
Australia or New Zealand for a first Oceania trip? +
New Zealand is often recommended first: more compact country (2 islands, reasonable distances), excellent road infrastructure for campervan trips, varied landscapes concentrated on a small territory. Australia demands sharper choices (East OR Centre OR West).
How much does a 3-week Australia trip cost? +
Count €7,500 to 12,000 for 2 people in comfort, flight from Paris included. Flight share is 30 to 40 % of total budget. Hotels in big cities (Sydney, Melbourne) around €200 per night in comfort. Internal travel adds €1,500 to 2,000.
When to go to French Polynesia? +
The dry season (April to October) is clearly preferable: clear skies, calm sea, temperatures 24 to 28 °C. Avoid December-March (wet season, possible cyclones).
Is a campervan road trip in New Zealand a good idea? +
Yes, probably the country's most-tested experience. Wicked Campers and Jucy offer vans at €60 to 120 per day. NZ has an excellent DOC (Department of Conservation) campground network, sometimes free. Camping permit required in several zones: check ahead.
Do you need the ETA for Australia? +
Yes for European citizens: eVisitor 651 (free) or ETA 601 (AUD 20). Apply online via the official site immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Valid 12 months. Processing time often a few hours.
Is Australia dangerous (snakes, sharks, jellyfish)? +
Actual risk is very low if guidelines are respected. Box jellyfish north of the Tropic of Capricorn in wet season (November-April): beaches are monitored and closed if needed. Sharks: present on some WA and NSW beaches, monitoring programmes in place. Snakes: 95 % of the territory never encounters any. Road risk exceeds all wildlife risks combined.
How to combine Australia and New Zealand efficiently? +
Best setup: Paris → Sydney (10 days on East Coast) → Sydney-Christchurch flight (3 h) → South Island NZ loop by van or car (10 days) → Auckland (2 days) → Paris return. Around 22 to 25 days. Count €6,000 to 8,000 for 2 people in comfort.
