Calendar

When to go to Canada

Country with harsh continental climate. The summer June-August window is the tourist peak (warm, parks open, hikes accessible). September-October offers foliage and fewer crowds. December-March targets northern lights and skiing. April-May ("mud season") and November are vague months to avoid unless you have a specific reason.

FAQ

FAQ

Do I need a visa or an eTA for Canada in 2026? +
French citizens (and most visa-exempt nationals) need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) to fly into Canada. Cost 7 CAD (~€5), apply online at canada.ca/eta (official site ONLY, beware of paid intermediary sites). Valid 5 years or until passport expires. Usual processing: a few minutes, sometimes 72h. eTA not required for land entry from the USA.
East or West coast for a first Canada trip? +
West if you want the Rockies (Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise, Moraine Lake), Vancouver and Tofino: geographically most spectacular, 10 days minimum. East if you want francophone culture (Montreal, Quebec City), the Saint Lawrence, Toronto and Niagara: 7-10 days are enough and it's the easiest combo from Paris (direct flight to Montreal). To do both in 2 weeks: Montreal + Toronto + Niagara + domestic flight to Calgary + Banff + Vancouver.
When can you see the northern lights in Canada? +
October to March, peaking December-February. Whitehorse (Yukon) is the most accessible base (direct flight from Vancouver, 2h30). Churchill (Manitoba) is more extreme and combines polar bears in October. Allow 3 nights minimum to push odds to 80-90%. Local tour operators provide cold-weather gear and transfers to heated glass cabins.
Is driving in Canada in winter reasonable? +
On maintained main routes (Montreal-Quebec, Highway 401, TransCanada near cities), yes with caution and winter tyres (mandatory in Quebec Dec 1 to Mar 15). Mountain roads (Icefields Parkway in winter, British Columbia passes): to avoid without snow experience. Prefer VIA Rail for long winter distances, or fly between regions.
Do they really speak French in Quebec? +
Yes, fully. French is Quebec's sole official language (8 million inhabitants). Montreal is bilingual in tourist services, but Quebec City, Gaspé, Saguenay and the backcountry are 95% francophone. Recognizable accent but full mutual comprehension. A few words: "dépanneur" (corner shop), "char" (car), "tuque" (beanie).
How to avoid bears in the Rockies? +
Black bears and grizzlies are present in Banff, Jasper, Yoho. Simple rules: never approach (100 m minimum), never leave food in your car or tent, use campground bear-proof lockers, hike in groups while making noise, carry bear spray (sold locally). Attacks remain rare (< 5/year in Canada) if you follow Parks Canada guidance.
Can I combine Canada and the USA on one trip? +
Yes. Niagara on the Canadian side lets you cross to the US side via the Rainbow Bridge (passport + ESTA required). West Coast: Vancouver + Seattle combo is easy (3h drive). Classic 3-week combo: New York + Boston + Montreal + Quebec City + Toronto + Niagara. Note: ESTA for the USA ($21) AND eTA for Canada (7 CAD) are two separate authorizations.
Niagara from the Canadian or American side? +
Canadian side, no contest. The frontal view of Horseshoe Falls and American Falls only exists from Ontario. The US side offers side angles and access to the foot of the falls (Cave of the Winds), but the postcard image is from Niagara Falls, Ontario. Allow one day + one night for evening illuminations.
