In brief

Québec City in brief

  • 1

Everything in Old Québec is walkable

Upper and lower town fit in 2 km². The funicular (CA$6 one-way) spares you the Côte de la Montagne climb; otherwise the Breakneck Stairs earn their name.

  • 2

    Montmorency Falls: taller than Niagara

An 83 m drop 15 minutes from downtown. Park access CA$10-13 by season, cable car ~CA$15 return. The suspension bridge crosses right over the void.

  • 3

Lévis ferry for the CA$4 view

A 12-minute crossing of the St. Lawrence, and the best view there is of Château Frontenac and Cap Diamant. Boards 2 minutes from Place Royale; just as good at night.

  • 4

Book early for Winter Carnival (February)

Two weeks of ice palace, night parades and snow baths around Bonhomme. Old Québec hotels sell out weeks ahead and prices climb 30%.

  • 5

    CA$7 eTA before boarding

The electronic travel authorization is applied for online at canada.ca, usually approved within minutes, valid 5 years. Nothing else needed for stays under 6 months.

FAQ

Québec City FAQ

How many days do you need in Québec City? +
Two full days for the upper town, lower town and the Lévis ferry. A third adds Montmorency Falls and Île d'Orléans, the classic excursion combo. With 4-5 days, push on to Charlevoix and the whales of Tadoussac.
Montreal or Québec City: which one? +
Québec City for the historic setting, Europe-in-America feel and a romantic 2-3 day stay. Montreal for festivals, neighborhoods and urban depth. They pair perfectly: 3 hours apart by train or bus, ideally 2 days in Québec + 3 in Montreal.
When should you visit Québec City? +
June to October to walk the city at 18-26°C, with the Festival d'été in July and fall colors in late September. February for the Carnival and the city under snow, with serious gear. March-April, thaw season, is the least pleasant window.
What is there to do in winter? +
The Winter Carnival (two weeks around early February): Bonhomme's ice palace, snow baths, night parades. Plus the Dufferin Terrace toboggan (CA$4), the Ice Hotel 30 minutes away, Montmorency's ice cone and Nordic spas. The snowed-in city alone justifies the trip.
Do you need a car in Québec City? +
Not for the city: the whole historic centre is walkable and bus 800 reaches Montmorency Falls. Yes for Île d'Orléans (no bus), Charlevoix or Tadoussac. Renting a car for the single excursion day costs less than keeping one all stay.
Do you need a visa for Québec City? +
Not for French and most EU nationals: the CA$7 eTA, applied for online at canada.ca, covers stays under 6 months with a valid passport. See our [Canada entry guide](/en/destinations/canada/practical/visa-canada/) for other nationalities and edge cases.
Are Montmorency Falls worth it? +
Yes: an 83 m drop, 30 m taller than Niagara, 15 minutes from downtown on a ~CA$3.25 bus. Count CA$10-13 park access and ~CA$15 for the return cable car, or climb the 487-step staircase for free. In winter, the ice cone at the foot of the falls is one of a kind.
What daily budget for Québec City? +
About €70 backpacker-style (hostel, casse-croûtes, everything on foot), €160 in comfort with a boutique hotel and restaurants, €350 and up at the Château Frontenac. As everywhere in Canada, taxes (~15%) and tip (15-18%) are added to listed prices.
