Why visit Colombia

  • 1

    Cartagena, postcard of the Caribbean

16th-century fortified old town listed by UNESCO, colorful Getsemaní lanes, ramparts at sunset, day trip to Islas del Rosario. The easiest gateway to the country.

  • 2

The Coffee Axis, UNESCO cultural landscape

The Zona Cafetera (Quindío, Risaralda, Caldas) UNESCO-listed since 2011. Coffee fincas around Salento, hiking in the Cocora Valley with its 60 m wax palms, vintage Willys jeeps.

  • 3

Medellín, a city that changed in one generation

Former world capital of the Escobar cartel in the 90s, today a Latino innovation hub, metrocables across the barrios, Comuna 13 street art. A transformation few cities can claim.

  • 4

Caño Cristales, the river of 5 colors

Unique phenomenon: Macarenia clavigera, an endemic plant, turns blood-red June to November. Access via La Macarena (Meta), flight from Bogotá or Villavicencio. Permit required.

  • 5

    Extreme geographic diversity

Two oceans (Caribbean + Pacific), three Andean ranges, Amazon in the south, Tatacoa desert, tropical beaches, snow-capped peaks. The 2nd most biodiverse country in the world after Brazil.

Calendar

When to go to Colombia

Equatorial climate but with two dry seasons thanks to its Andean position. Main dry season: December to March (also the big high tourist season with Christmas + Barranquilla Carnival in February). Secondary dry season: July-August. For Caño Cristales, strict June-November window. April-May and September-October are the wet months to avoid unless you specifically target Caño Cristales.

FAQ

FAQ

Do you need a visa for Colombia in 2026? +
No, no visa for French/EU citizens for tourist stays under 90 days, extendable for another 90 days on site at Migración Colombia (free, online procedure). Passport valid 6 months after entry and return or onward ticket are the only requirements. No mandatory prior electronic form to date (check cancilleria.gov.co before departure).
How many days do you need in Colombia? +
Minimum 10 days for the classic triangle Bogotá + Salento (Coffee Axis) + Cartagena. 14 days to add Medellín and Tayrona Park. 3 weeks to include Caño Cristales (June-November only) or the Lost City trek (4 days minimum). Domestic flight essential beyond 10 days, otherwise buses eat the trip (Bogotá-Cartagena by bus = 18-22h).
When to see Caño Cristales, the 5-color river? +
Strict window June to November, with optimal peak July to October. The endemic Macarenia clavigera plant only turns red during this period, when the water level is just low enough to expose the flora to the sun. Access from La Macarena (Meta), Bogotá-La Macarena 1h flight (Satena or charter). Permit required, park closed off-season.
Is Colombia dangerous in 2026? +
The country has changed deeply since the 2016 peace agreement. Classic tourist zones (Cartagena, Medellín outside barrios, Coffee Axis, Tayrona, Bogotá center and north) are visitable without exceptional precaution. France Diplomatie still formally advises against certain border areas (Norte de Santander, Catatumbo, rural Cauca, southern Bolívar) and recommends vigilance in rural Pacific zones. Pickpocketing frequent in Bogotá and Medellín: do not flash your phone on the street.
Domestic flights or buses in Colombia? +
Domestic flights for long distances. Bogotá-Cartagena: 1h20 by plane (from €50 on Avianca, Wingo) vs 20h by bus. Bogotá-Medellín: 1h flight vs 9h bus. For short distances (Salento-Medellín, Santa Marta-Cartagena), the bus remains viable and cheaper (€5-10). Satena serves remote areas (Amazon, Caño Cristales).
Is the Lost City trek doable for an amateur hiker? +
Yes for a fit hiker. 4 days / 46 km in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, cumulative elevation 2,200 m, humid and hot climate, hammock camp accommodation. No critical altitude (max 1,200 m). Local guide mandatory (only 5 licensed agencies). Plan €400-450 all-inclusive from Santa Marta. Dry period December-March recommended.
Should you visit a coffee finca in Colombia? +
It's one of the trip highlights. From Salento or Filandia, half or full day at a producer: cherry picking (in season), pulping, drying, roasting, tasting. Recommended fincas: Don Elias (rustic, Spanish only), El Ocaso (touristy, bilingual), Las Acacias (high end). €25-50 per person.
Bogotá at 2,640 m, should you fear the altitude? +
For the vast majority of travelers, no. At 2,640 m, acute mountain sickness affects less than 10% of arrivals, mostly with heavy exertion. Tip: avoid intense sport the first 24-48 hours, hydrate, light meals. If you arrive from Paris (direct flight ~11h), plan a quiet day before Monserrate (3,152 m, avoid on day 1).
