Travel to Tunisia: the complete 2026 guide

Sidi Bou Said with its white alleys and blue doors, UNESCO medinas of Tunis and Sousse, Sahara dunes at Douz, Matmata troglodyte dwellings where Lucas filmed Star Wars, Djerba beaches, El Jem Roman amphitheater. Tunisia packs a full Mediterranean and a desert into a 2h30 direct flight from Paris, with no visa and a budget often half that of Morocco.

When to go to Tunisia

Mediterranean climate in the North and on the coast, desert in the South. Ideal tourist window is April-June and September-October: 22-28°C, sea still swimmable in September, clear skies. Summer (July-August) very hot on the coast (35-38°C) and stifling inland (45°C+ in Tozeur). Winter mild during the day in the Sahara (18-22°C) but cool nights (3-8°C), perfect for desert excursions without the heat.

Which trip suits you?

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Families

Hammamet or Djerba in all-inclusive resort format (Iberostar, Magic Hotels) from €600/person per week. Supervised beaches, kids clubs, buffet restaurants, Friguia park near Sousse. Ideal first North Africa trip with kids.

💑

Couples and honeymoon

Charm riad in Sidi Bou Said (Dar Said from €180/night), dinner on the Café des Délices terrace at sunset, two nights under Berber tent at Ksar Ghilane (Yadis Ksar Ghilane). 8-day loop around €2,000-3,500 excluding flight.

🎒

Backpacking

One of the cheapest destinations in the Mediterranean basin. Hostel in Tunis medina €12, Tunisian sandwich €1.50, Tunis-Sousse train €5, louage (shared taxi) Tunis-Tozeur €20. 14 days possible under €700 excluding flight.

👤

Solo travel

Tunis, Sidi Bou Said and Djerba very accessible. For the Sahara, go through an organized excursion (Dar Dhiafa, Sahara Douz Tours) rather than independently. Women: covered clothing in medinas, beaches tolerant in resort areas.

🏛️

Archaeology and UNESCO

Carthage (Punic + Roman), Bardo (most complete collection of Roman mosaics in the world), El Jem (3rd-largest amphitheater of antiquity), Dougga (best-preserved Roman city in North Africa), Kairouan (4th holy city of Islam). Allow 10 days for a serious tour.

🐪

Off-the-beaten-track desert

Beyond classic Douz/Tozeur excursions, aim for Ksar Ghilane (isolated oasis with hot spring), Chott el-Jerid (salt lake 7,000 km²) and the Grand Erg Oriental on the Sabria side. 4x4 essential, local guide recommended. Allow 5-7 days for desert alone.

FAQ

FAQ

Do you need a visa for Tunisia in 2026? +
No for EU nationals on tourist stay under 90 days. Passport valid 3 months past return date is enough, plus an arrival card to fill on the plane or at arrival. No e-visa, no entry fee, no exit tax to settle online. For long stays or other nationalities, check the Tunisian consulate website in your country.
How many days do you need for Tunisia? +
7 days for the combo Tunis + Sidi Bou Said + Carthage + Hammamet (coast and culture). 10 days to add Sousse, El Jem and go down to Tozeur + Douz (Sahara). 2 weeks for the full loop including Djerba and Matmata. One week in resort format in a beach resort is enough if the goal is purely beach and relaxation.
When to go to the Tunisian Sahara? +
October to April, ideally November to March. Days 18-25°C pleasant, nights cool (3-10°C, bring a fleece). Strictly avoid June to September: 45°C+ in Tozeur afternoons, scorching dunes, unbearable bivouacs. December and January are the desert tourist peak, book 1-2 months ahead.
Is Tunisia safe in 2026? +
The country is generally safe for tourists in classic zones (Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, Carthage, Sousse, Hammamet, Djerba, Tozeur, Douz). France Diplomatie advises against border zones with Libya and Algeria, the Chaambi and Mghila massifs, and certain deep South zones outside marked circuits. Sahara excursions via local operators remain trouble-free. Standard vigilance: pickpocketing in medinas, taxi scams in Tunis.
Djerba or Hammamet for a family beach week? +
Djerba if you want the island (longer and quieter beaches, Berber/Jewish traditions, easy access by direct flight to Mellita). Hammamet if you prefer to stay close to Tunis (60 km, possibility of half-day excursions to Tunis/Carthage/Sidi Bou Said). On the hotel side, the offer is equivalent (Iberostar, Magic Life, Riu, Steigenberger clubs). Slightly warmer water at Djerba in late season.
Are there any formalities for a Sahara excursion? +
No internal visa or special authorization to visit the Tunisian Sahara (Douz, Tozeur, Ksar Ghilane, Matmata). If you plan an off-road 4x4 excursion, go through a licensed local agency (guides know the tracks and authorized zones). Beyond Tembaïne or towards Borj el-Khadra (deep south), administrative authorization is required: the agency handles it.
Better to rent a car or hire a driver? +
Rental car for the North and coast (Tunis-Sousse-Sfax motorway smooth, simple parking, count €30-45/day). Driver or organized excursion for the Sahara (desert tracks, rare signs, unreliable GPS). Louages (shared intercity taxis) are an economical and fast alternative for connections between major cities: €15-25 for Tunis-Tozeur (6h).
Does Ramadan affect travel in Tunisia? +
Yes, moderately. During the month of Ramadan (mid-February to mid-March in 2026), local restaurants often close during the day, tourist site hours are shortened (2-3 pm closure), the general pace slows. Tourist hotels and beach areas (Hammamet, Djerba, Sousse) continue to operate normally with food service all day. Lively evenings after iftar in the medinas.
