FAQ

Tunis FAQ

How many days to visit Tunis? +
Two days cover the medina, the Bardo, Carthage and Sidi Bou Saïd using the TGM. A third day lets you escape to El Jem or Kairouan, or simply breathe between sights. Three days is the sweet spot to avoid rushing.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in Tunis? +
The medina for immersion: restored dars, walking distance to the Zitouna and Avenue Bourguiba. La Marsa or Sidi Bou Saïd for the seafront and easy TGM access. Downtown (Lafayette) for chain hotels and convenience.
How to get from Tunis-Carthage airport to the city? +
Yellow taxi on the meter, 10 to 20 TND by day to the city center, 15 to 30 TND at night. The airport is 8 km from the center, 20 min off peak. Bus 35 serves Avenue Bourguiba for 0.8 TND but waiting times are unpredictable.
Is Tunis safe for travelers? +
Yes overall. The country has been stable for years, despite a sometimes exaggerated perception abroad. Usual vigilance against pickpockets in the medina and Avenue Bourguiba. Check your foreign office travel advice before departure.
When to avoid Tunis? +
July and August for the heat (35°C+), especially on sun-exposed Roman sites. Ramadan slows daytime life (restaurants closed until sunset). Rainiest months are December and January, but the winter light on the Bardo mosaics is stunning.
Do you need a visa for Tunisia? +
No for French and most EU nationals: 90 days visa-free with a passport valid 3 months past your exit date. See our [Tunisia visa guide](/en/destinations/tunisia/practical/visa-tunisia/) for other nationalities.
