Why visit Albania

  • 1

Ionian Riviera 50% cheaper than Croatia or Greece

Translucent turquoise waters at Ksamil, Himara and Dhërmi, white pebble beaches, sunbed at €5 a day. Seafront meal €8-12, beachfront hotel €50-80 in high season. Three times cheaper than Hvar or Mykonos at equivalent comfort.

  • 2

Berat and Gjirokastër, two UNESCO Ottoman cities

Berat nicknamed the city of a thousand windows, with its tiered white houses and inhabited castle. Gjirokastër the stone city, with its cobbled lanes and the Enver Hoxha house-museum. Both listed as World Heritage for their preserved Ottoman architecture.

  • 3

Albanian Alps, Europe's last real trek

Theth to Valbona in 2 days via the Valbona Pass (1,800 m) remains one of the most spectacular treks in the Balkans. Glacial valleys, farmer guesthouses, traditional kulla. Season June to mid-October.

  • 4

Visa-free 90 days for Europeans, perfect short trip

No visa for EU and Swiss nationals, free stay up to 90 days. Outside Schengen, so time in Albania does not count against the Schengen 90/180-day quota. Entry possible with just an EU national ID card.

  • 5

    Mediterranean cuisine with Ottoman touches

Spinach byrek, grilled qofte, fërgesë with pepper and cheese, homemade raki, Berat wine. Generous cooking, fresh ingredients, unbeatable prices: a full mezze for two for €15 by the sea.

When to go to Albania

Mediterranean climate on the coast, mild continental inland. The coast is hot and dry from June to September (28-32 °C), ideal for swimming. The interior and the Alps stay pleasant in summer (20-25 °C at altitude). April-May and September-early October are the optimal windows: sea still swimmable, smaller crowds, softer prices. Winter is mild on the coast but many tavernas close.

Which trip suits you?

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Family

Riviera very family-friendly from age 5: calm water, pebble beaches, short distances, reasonable prices. Avoid July-August in Ksamil (saturated). May-June and September are perfect. Plan 8-10 days.

💑

Honeymoon

Less clichéd than Santorini: Dhërmi and Himara hide 4-5★ boutique hotels at €150-280/night in high season. Sunsets over the Ionian, beach dinners, boat trips. Budget €2,500-4,500 for 10 days.

🎒

Backpacker

One of the cheapest European destinations: dorm €12-18, meal €5-8, long-distance bus €5-12. Strong social hostel scene in Tirana, Berat and Sarandë. Doable at €700-900 for 14 days excluding flights.

👤

Solo

Albania is very solo-friendly: good English among younger people, solid safety, low prices, plenty of social hostels. Ideal for a first solo trip in Eastern Europe. Long-distance buses run reliably with operators like Gjirafa Travel.

🥾

Hiking

Theth-Valbona in 2 days via the pass remains one of Europe's most beautiful treks (8h walking, 1,800 m positive elevation). Season June to mid-October. Farmer guesthouses €25-35 half-board. GPS and paper map recommended.

🚗

Coast road trip

SH8 route from Vlorë to Sarandë via the Llogara Pass (1,027 m) is one of Europe's most beautiful coastal roads. Car rental in Tirana €25-45/day. Plan 7-10 days for the full coast with cove stops.

FAQ

FAQ

Do I need a visa for Albania in 2026? +
No, no visa for EU, EEA, UK and Swiss nationals. Free stay up to 90 days within a 180-day period. An EU national ID card is enough to enter (passport not mandatory for many EU citizens). Albania is not in the Schengen Area, so time spent in Albania does not count against the Schengen 90/180-day quota.
How many days do you need to visit Albania? +
Minimum 7 days to cover the Riviera (Tirana, Berat, Sarandë, Ksamil, Himara). 10 days to add Gjirokastër and Vlorë. 14 days is the full format including the Albanian Alps (Theth, Valbona). For a combo with Montenegro or Greece, plan 3 weeks.
When is the best time to visit the Albanian Riviera? +
May-June and September-early October are the optimal windows: swimmable sea (22-26 °C), moderate crowds, reasonable prices. July-August are still pleasant but Ksamil and Sarandë get saturated and prices climb 40-60%. April and mid-October work for the southern coast if you accept some non-swimming days.
Is Albania safe in 2026? +
Yes, Albania ranks among the safest Balkan countries for tourists. Crime against foreigners is very low. Standard vigilance for pickpockets in busy tourist areas of Sarandë and Tirana. Energetic local driving: extra caution at the wheel. Most foreign offices place Albania at normal vigilance, with no discouraged zones.
Are euros accepted in Albania? +
Yes, but informally. The official currency is the Albanian lek (ALL, €1 ≈ 100 ALL). Euros are widely accepted on the Riviera (Ksamil, Sarandë, Himara, Vlorë), in Tirana and in tourist hotels and restaurants. You typically pay 5-15% more in euros than in leks. Cafés, supermarkets and small local shops only take leks. Better to withdraw leks from an ATM on arrival.
Do people speak English in Albania? +
Yes among under-40s, especially in tourism. Tirana, Sarandë, Berat and the Riviera are well-equipped in English. Italian is widespread (decades of Italian TV exposure). French is rare. In Alpine villages and rural areas, plan a translation app or a few Albanian words (faleminderit for thank you).
Can I combine Albania with Montenegro or Greece? +
Yes, this is the most common combo. To the north, Shkodër is 1h from the Montenegrin border, Kotor 2h30 by road. To the south, Sarandë is 30 minutes by ferry from Corfu (Greece), perfect for a day trip or an Albania + Cyclades combo. Plan 3 weeks for Montenegro + Albania + Corfu as a road trip.
Car rental or bus in Albania? +
Car for the Riviera (SH8 route) and the Alps: essential, distances are short but roads are winding. €25-45/day. Buses and furgons (minibuses) for the Tirana-Berat-Gjirokastër-Sarandë axis: very cheap (€4-12), comfortable, hourly frequency. For mixed coast + inland, a car stays more flexible. International driving permit not mandatory but recommended.
