UNESCO Old Havana, 1950s American cars, salsa drifting from open windows, cobbled Trinidad, the karst mogotes of Viñales, the turquoise beaches of Varadero and the Cayos. Cuba remains one of the most singular islands in the Caribbean, provided you arrive prepared: fuel and medication shortages persist in 2026, and bringing euros in cash is now essential.

Old Havana, UNESCO time capsule
La Habana Vieja listed by UNESCO since 1982. 4 plazas (Vieja, San Francisco, Catedral, Armas), restored colonial façades, an 8 km Malecón. Plan 3 full days for the capital.
Casas particulares, the real immersion
Legal homestays since 1997. €25-40 a night with breakfast, hosts often speak French, home-cooked dinner €10-15. The only way to feel Cuba from the inside.
Salsa and music everywhere, for free
Casa de la Música in Havana and Trinidad, Buena Vista Social Club at Hotel Nacional, street son on Calle Obispo. Cuban music isn't a cliché: it really does soak every town.
Viñales, tobacco and the mogotes
UNESCO-listed valley. Tobacco plantations visited at the guajiro's house (€3-5), cigars rolled in front of you, 300 m limestone mogotes, horseback rides through paddy fields. 4 hours by bus from Havana.
Real shortages to plan for in 2026
Severe economic crisis since 2020. Rationed fuel (6-12h queues at stations), medication shortages, 4-8h power cuts outside tourist zones. Pack your own medical kit and plenty of cash.
Calendar
Tropical climate with two seasons. The dry season (November-April) is the tourist window: cool mornings (20-25 °C), warm afternoons (26-30 °C). Wet season May-October, with hurricane peak August-October. Tourist peak January-March, book casas 2 months ahead for Trinidad and Viñales.

Destinations
By traveler profile
Varadero for simplicity (all-inclusive, safe beaches, animation), Viñales for nature (horse rides from age 6), Havana on 2 days max with kids. Avoid long bus trips, bring children's medication from home.
Combo Havana (2 nights Iberostar Parque Central, €300-450/night) + Cayos (Iberostar Cayo Coco, 5-star, €250-400/night half-board). Private vintage car for the Havana tour, €60/h. Budget €5,000-7,000 for 12 days.
Casas particulares everywhere (€25-35/night), comfortable Viazul buses (€12-25 between towns), homemade meals €8-12. €1,100 for 14 days excluding flight, one of the best immersion-to-price ratios in the Caribbean.
Cuba is very solo-friendly. Casas act as HQs, hosts connect travelers, salsa nights at Casa de la Música break the ice. Basic Spanish recommended: English is rare outside tourist zones.
Havana, Trinidad and Camagüey are unmatched playgrounds: pastel American cars, peeling façades, golden late-afternoon light on the Malecón. Ask before shooting locals: 1 CUC tip is enough.
Santiago de Cuba for the roots (Casa de la Trova), Trinidad for open-air nights (Casa de la Música, steps near Plaza Mayor), Havana for Buena Vista and clubs (Fábrica de Arte Cubano). Private lessons €8-15/h.

€22 at the embassy, travel agency or airport counter before your flight. 30 days, extendable once on site. Not a visa in the strict sense, simpler.
Read the guide →Cuban peso (CUP) is the only legal currency but EUR and USD accepted everywhere since 2023. Bring 80% in EUR cash, credit cards mostly useless.
See sheet →Proof required at entry since 2010. Public healthcare decent but medication shortages. Evacuation often to Mexico or Miami.
Compare →Cubacel monopoly, eSIM possible but slow (2G/3G most of the time). Wifi via ETECSA cards in hotels and parks. Treat Cuba as a real disconnect.
