Adapt by season

Plan around heat and hurricanes in the east

This grand tour heads east (Santiago, Baracoa), hotter and wetter than the west. From December to April, the east stays pleasant, 27 to 31°C. From June to October, Baracoa and the Oriente get heavy rain and storm risk peaks in September-October, a window to avoid for this part of the route. If you travel in summer, shorten the east and keep the better-sheltered west.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In March 2025, the La Farola road between Santiago and Baracoa, carved into the mountain, stayed with me: 4h30 of bends with ocean views at every pass. The 8am colectivo avoids the midday heat. Absolutely worth doing again.
  • Five nights in Santiago: enough for El Morro castle, El Cobre, the son nights and the trova without rushing.
  • The domestic flight back from the east: it saves two full bus days.
  • Four nights in Baracoa: the end of the island, cocoa, Río Toa and El Yunque are worth the detour.
  • Keep 1 or 2 buffer days over the month: Cuban transport often slips, a margin helps.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Camagüey (1 night is enough) if the east draws you more.
  • Swap Varadero for a return to Viñales if you prefer countryside to a tour-operator beach.
  • Reverse the tour in the rainy season: do the west first, keep the east if the weather allows.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month too long for Cuba? +
No, it's the ideal length to link west and east without rushing. Under 3 weeks, Santiago and Baracoa, 800 km from Havana, stay hard to fit in without sacrificing the center.
Do you need a visa for 30 days in Cuba? +
The tourist card is valid 30 days, just enough. For more margin, a 30-day extension is obtained on site at immigration offices (about €25), to arrange before expiry.
How do you reach Baracoa and Santiago from Havana? +
By Viazul bus (long, 12 to 15h total) or by chaining the route's stages (Camagüey, Santiago). The La Farola colectivo links Santiago to Baracoa in 4h30. For the return, a domestic flight saves 2 days on the road.
How much cash should you bring for a month? +
Your entire budget on site, in cash, since foreign cards barely work. For a comfort profile, count €2,200 to €2,800 in cash excluding the international flight.
What's the best period for this grand tour? +
December to April: the east (Santiago, Baracoa) stays pleasant and dry, 27 to 31°C. Avoid September-October, hurricane peak, especially for Baracoa and the Oriente, very exposed to heavy rain.
Can this route be done on public transport only? +
Yes, but with long bus and colectivo days. A single domestic flight (return from the east) is enough to smooth the month. The rest is easy by Viazul and colectivos.
