Why visit Mexico

  • 1

Yucatán and 30+ accessible Mayan sites

Chichén Itzá (Wonder of the World), Uxmal, Tulum on the sea, Palenque in the jungle, Cobá climbable pyramid, Ek Balam less crowded. The densest Mayan heritage in the world.

  • 2

    Unique cenotes on the planet

Crystal-clear freshwater wells in the Yucatán jungle. Ik Kil, Dos Ojos, Suytun, Gran Cenote. Sacred to the Mayans, perfect to swim and dive between two temples.

  • 3

Maya Train open since late 2023

1,554 km railway connecting Cancún, Tulum, Mérida, Palenque and Campeche. 34 stations, full passenger service since July 2024. Changes how you do the Yucatán.

  • 4

    Oaxaca, UNESCO intangible heritage

Cuisine listed by UNESCO (mole, tlayudas, mezcal). The country's most authentic Día de los Muertos, indigenous markets, Monte Albán ruins. Our cultural favorite.

  • 5

Día de los Muertos + 2 oceans

Day of the Dead October 31 to November 2: altars, cempasúchil flowers, processions in Oaxaca and Mexico City. And a country bordered by 2 oceans: turquoise Caribbean east, Pacific west.

Calendar

When to go to Mexico

Tropical climate with two seasons. Dry season (November-April) is the ideal tourist window, peak December-March. Wet season (May-October) coincides with monsoon and hurricane season on the coasts (August-October the worst). Día de los Muertos from October 31 to November 2 is worth a trip on its own.

Which trip suits you?

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Family

Yucatán is ideal: cenotes accessible from age 5, calm Akumal beaches (turtles), Xcaret park, Tulum facing the sea. Choose an all-inclusive or rental in Playa del Carmen. Minimum 12-14 days.

💑

Honeymoon

Tulum boutique hotels (Azulik, Be Tulum), private cenote spa, dinner on the sand. Holbox + Tulum + Mérida combo in 12 days. Budget €5,000-9,000 ex-flight for premium format.

🎒

Backpacker

Hostels €15-25/night, comfortable ADO buses (Mérida-Tulum €12), street food €3-6. The Yucatán is very accessible: budget €1,300-1,700 over 14 days ex-flight.

👤

Solo

Mexico is very solo-friendly in the Yucatán and Mexico City: social hostels, decent English in tourism, ADO bus + Maya Train make travel simple. Avoid driving at night in rural areas.

📷

Photographer

Cenotes (overhead light 11am-1pm), Tulum at sunrise, Día de Muertos in Oaxaca early November, San Cristóbal markets. The most photogenic country in Latin America.

🏄

Pacific surf

Puerto Escondido (Zicatela, world-class wave), Sayulita (beginners), Punta Mita. Swell season April to October. Surf + Oaxaca combo in 10 days = winning format.

FAQ

FAQ

Do I need a visa for Mexico in 2026? +
No visa for French, EU, US, Canadian, UK and most other Western citizens for tourist stays up to 180 days. On arrival you automatically receive the FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple), an immigration form serving as a tourist permit. Indicative 2026 cost: about 983 MXN (≈ $54 USD), often included in airfare for scheduled flights. Form to fill before or on arrival at the airport. Maximum 180-day validity, single entry.
How many days for Mexico? +
Minimum 10 days for the Yucatán alone (Cancún + Tulum + cenotes + Chichén Itzá + Mérida). 14 days to combine Mexico City + Oaxaca + Yucatán. 3 weeks to add Baja California or Chiapas. The country is huge (15× France): don't try to see everything in one trip. Better to do one region well.
When to go to Mexico, and when are hurricanes? +
Dry season November-April, ideal window. Atlantic hurricane season June to November, real peak August-October on Yucatán and Riviera Maya. Pacific (Puerto Escondido, Baja) also has its storm season May-November. Día de los Muertos October 31 to November 2 is worth a trip on its own (Oaxaca + Mexico City).
Is Mexico safe in 2026? +
Varies by region. Tourist areas (Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Mexico City center, Oaxaca) remain at Level 1-2 on U.S. Travel Advisory, equivalent to a European city trip with normal caution. Northern states (Sinaloa, Tamaulipas, Guerrero outside Acapulco) are not recommended by France Diplomatie. Avoid driving at night outside tourist areas, don't flash valuables, use official taxis or Uber.
Should I rent a car or take the bus in Mexico? +
Yucatán: car is ideal (great roads, reasonable distances, easy parking at cenotes). €35-50/day rental, gas at €1.20/L. ADO buses and the new Maya Train are comfortable economical alternatives (Mérida-Cancún 4-5h, €20-30). Mexico City: don't rent (traffic, impossible parking): metro + Uber. Oaxaca: ADO bus or colectivos.
Can I swim in cenotes if I'm not a strong swimmer? +
Yes, most tourist cenotes require life jackets (Ik Kil, Suytun, Dos Ojos). Water is crystal clear, constant 22-25 °C, shallow near platforms. For non-swimmers or children, prefer open cenotes like Ik Kil. Certified divers: Dos Ojos and Cenote Angelita offer one of the world's best cave networks.
Is English enough in Mexico? +
In tourist areas (Cancún, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, CDMX hotels, Mayan sites): yes. Elsewhere (Oaxaca, Chiapas, inland Yucatán, local markets): a minimum of Spanish helps a lot. Download Google Translate offline or DeepL beforehand. Learning 50 Spanish words changes the trip.
Is the Maya Train worth it? +
Yes for connecting Cancún - Tulum - Chichén Itzá - Mérida - Palenque (1,554 km, 34 stations, operational since 2024). Comfortable, air-conditioned, panoramic. Budget €10-25 depending on route, Premier or Turista class. Booking online at trenmaya.gob.mx. Cancún - Tulum round trip in 1h, Cancún - Mérida in 4h. Ideal alternative to car rental for main axes.
