In brief

Cancún in brief

  • 1

Pick your side: hotel zone or downtown

The hotel zone lines up 22 km of beachfront resorts ($180-300/night). El Centro, 20 min away by bus, costs a third as much and serves real Yucatecan food.

  • 2

Chichén Itzá: 697 MXN entry, leave early

About €35 for foreign visitors (federal INAH fee plus state fee, both mandatory). Organized tours from Cancún run €50-80 with a cenote and Valladolid. Leave at 7am to beat the heat.

  • 3

Playa Delfines, the public beach to aim for

At km 18 of the hotel zone, with no resort on the sand. Free access, free parking, the Cancún sign for the photo. Get there before 10am on weekends.

  • 4

Watch the sargassum from May to August

Brown seaweed lands in waves on the east-facing coast. Hotels rake their stretch every morning, but check a live sargassum map before booking a summer trip.

  • 5

R-1 and R-2 buses: 12 pesos for everything

White buses run 24/7 between downtown and the hotel zone. 12 MXN per ride (€0.60), paid in pesos to the driver. A taxi on the same run tops 300 MXN.

FAQ

Cancún FAQ

How many days do you need in Cancún? +
Three days cover the beaches, Isla Mujeres and a Chichén Itzá day trip. Allow 4 to 5 days to add Tulum, a few cenotes or a park day. Beyond a week, you're better off moving on to Holbox, Bacalar or Mérida than staying put.
Cancún or Playa del Carmen / Tulum? +
Cancún for the widest beaches, the airport 20 min away and the best resort value. Playa del Carmen for a walkable town where you go out on foot. Tulum for bohemian boutique hotels, at steep prices and with narrower beaches. The classic combo: 3 nights in Cancún + 3 nights further south.
When is there sargassum in Cancún? +
Most landings happen between May and August, with peaks that vary year to year. North-facing beaches (Playa Tortugas, Langosta, Isla Mujeres, Playa Mujeres) are the most spared. From December to April the water is almost always clear. Check a live sargassum map the week before you fly.
Is Cancún dangerous? +
Tourist areas (hotel zone, downtown's commercial core, Puerto Juárez) are heavily patrolled and incidents involving travelers are rare. Basic rules apply: agree taxi fares upfront, skip outlying districts at night, withdraw cash at bank branches rather than standalone ATMs.
Should you rent a car in Cancún? +
Not for the city: the R-1 bus covers the whole hotel zone for 12 MXN. A rental (€30-50/day, check the mandatory liability insurance is included) pays off for roaming: the Puerto Morelos cenotes, Valladolid, Chichén Itzá at your own pace. Main roads are in good shape; avoid driving at night outside town.
Can you pay in dollars or euros in Cancún? +
US dollars are accepted almost everywhere in the hotel zone, at an unfavorable house rate. Euros, rarely. Pay in pesos (€1 ≈ 20 MXN): withdraw at bank ATMs (BBVA, Banorte) or use a no-fee card like Revolut. Keep cash for taxis, markets and tips.
What are the entry requirements for Mexico? +
No visa for EU citizens for up to 180 days. Arriving by air, immigration issues the digital FMM (FMMD): a QR-code receipt to keep until you leave the country. A passport valid for the length of stay and a return ticket can be requested. See our [Mexico entry guide](/en/destinations/mexico/practical/visa-mexico/).
