Italy, Spain or Portugal are ideal gateways. Short flights, familiar Romance languages, European culture. Italy offers the most variety over 2 weeks (Sicily + Tuscany + Puglia is an excellent format).
When to go to Europe for sunshine? +
May to October for the Mediterranean South (Italy, Spain, Greece, Croatia, mainland Portugal). Year-round for the Canary Islands and Madeira. June to August only for the North (Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Sweden).
Which European country is cheapest in 2026? +
Albania remains the cheapest: €30 to 50 per day in comfort. Then Portugal outside Algarve, and Greece off-season (October-April). Croatia, Southern Italy and Andalusia run around €60 to 80 per day.
Do you need a passport for Europe in 2026? +
For Schengen and Croatia, a French national ID is enough. For the UK (Scotland included), passport is mandatory since Brexit, and the ETA (electronic travel authorisation) must be requested online before departure.
