  • 1

    Highlands, cinema-grade landscapes

Glen Coe, Loch Lomond, Cairngorms, Glen Etive. Glacial valleys, deep lochs, endless moors. Backdrops to Outlander, Skyfall and Harry Potter. Western Europe's rawest nature, 4 hours' drive from Edinburgh.

  • 2

The North Coast 500, a mythical 830 km loop

Launched in 2015, the NC500 loops out of Inverness along the north coast. Cliffs, empty beaches, castles and fishing villages. 5 to 10 days depending on pace. One of the most beautiful drives in the world.

Speyside (Glenfiddich, Macallan, Glenlivet), Islay (Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg), Highlands (Dalmore, Oban), Lowlands. Guided tours with tastings from €15. The Malt Whisky Trail covers 9 flagship Speyside distilleries.

  • 4

3,000 castles in a single country

Edinburgh Castle in the heart of the capital, Eilean Donan on its islet, Stirling and its royal past, Urquhart by Loch Ness, Dunnottar perched on its cliff. More castles per km² than any other country.

  • 5

    Edinburgh Festival and Hogmanay

The Fringe in August makes Edinburgh the world's largest arts festival (3,000 shows over 3 weeks). Hogmanay, the Scottish New Year, turns the capital into a 3-day celebration with torchlight procession and fireworks.

Oceanic climate, highly variable: you can have 4 rain showers and 4 rainbows in a single day. May-June and September are the best window (15-20 °C, long days, few midges). July-August: warm but clouds of midges (biting insects) in the Highlands and on Skye. Winter: snow on the Cairngorms, Edinburgh bargains, but many coastal roads tough.

FAQ

FAQ

Do I need a visa or ETA for Scotland in 2026? +
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, so outside Schengen since Brexit. Since 25 February 2026, all EU nationals (including French) must obtain a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before boarding. Fee: £20 since 8 April 2026 (up from £16). Apply online at gov.uk or via the UK ETA app, usually approved within minutes, valid 2 years with multiple stays of up to 6 months. Without ETA, the airline, ferry or Eurostar will deny boarding.
When to go to Scotland? +
May-June and September are the best window: 15-20 °C, long days (up to 19h of daylight in June), few midges, lush green landscapes. July-August: peak tourist season, warmer but clouds of midges in Highlands and on Skye, prices x1.5. Winter (November-March): cold, snow on the Cairngorms, very short days (8h in December) but Edinburgh magical at Hogmanay.
Do I need to hire a car in Scotland? +
For the Highlands, Skye and the NC500: yes, essential. ScotRail trains (West Highland Line, Far North Line) cover the main axes but remain limited. Driving on the left, EU licenses accepted, hire from €35/day in Edinburgh or Inverness. Watch out for single-track roads (one lane with passing places) on Skye and the NC500.
What to do about Scottish midges? +
Midges (biting flies of the Highlands) peak from June to September, especially at dusk near water (lochs, rivers). Solutions: avoid wet zones at dawn and dusk, long sleeves, repellent like Smidge (strong DEET recommended), head net for wild camping. Wind disperses them.
Which castles should I visit in Scotland? +
Edinburgh Castle (must-see, £21.50 ticket, book ahead), Stirling Castle (royal, Battle of Bannockburn), Eilean Donan (most photographed, near Skye), Urquhart Castle (by Loch Ness), Dunnottar (spectacular clifftop near Aberdeen), Glamis (birthplace of the Queen Mother).
How do I do the North Coast 500? +
830 km loop from Inverness, clockwise (recommended for coastal views) or anti-clockwise. Minimum 5 days, ideally 7-10. Car essential or campervan. Key stops: Ullapool, Lochinver, Durness, Tongue, John O'Groats, Dunrobin Castle. Book accommodation 3-6 months ahead for May-September.
Is there a direct flight Paris-Scotland? +
Yes. Direct flights Paris CDG or Orly to Edinburgh (~1h45) with Air France, EasyJet, KLM (via Amsterdam). Direct Paris-Glasgow also (EasyJet, British Airways). Aberdeen and Inverness via London or Amsterdam stopover. Fares from €80 return in May/September, €150-250 in peak season.
Can you drink tap water in Scotland? +
Yes, tap water is drinkable and excellent everywhere in Scotland. It's even considered among the best in the UK (source of whisky distilleries). No need for plastic water bottles.
