Why visit Norway

  • 1

    Two UNESCO World Heritage fjords

Geirangerfjord (15 km, Seven Sisters waterfalls) and Nærøyfjord (Europe's narrowest, 250 m wide in places) listed since 2005. Ferry, kayak or scenic road, all three work.

  • 2

    Lofoten, Scandinavia's most photographed archipelago

Red fishermen's cabins (rorbu), jagged peaks, white beaches of Haukland and Uttakleiv. Reine, Hamnøy and Henningsvær remain the must-see villages. Reached by flight via Bodø + ferry, or direct Oslo-Leknes.

  • 3

Northern lights in Tromsø, October to March

High probability on clear skies between 6pm and 1am. Tromsø, Senja, Alta, the Lofoten islands and Lyngenfjord are the best bases. Plan 6 nights on site to maximise chances (~70% observation rate after 4 nights).

  • 4

Midnight sun in summer north of the Arctic Circle

From 20 May to 22 July in Tromsø, the sun does not set. Hiking and night cruises, photography possible 24/7. Bonus for the Lofoten and Nordkapp.

  • 5

    Top-tier infrastructure and pristine nature

Scenic routes (Atlantic Road, Trollstigen), frequent and punctual ferries, well-marked trails, rorbu cabins and lodges. Safe country, fluent English, Wi-Fi everywhere.

Calendar

When to go to Norway

Oceanic climate in the south and west, subarctic in the north. Summer (June-August) opens fjords, roads and trails. Winter (November-March) closes some passes but unlocks the northern lights. The shoulder months (May and September) are the most volatile but also the most beautiful for light.

FAQ

FAQ

Do I need a visa to travel to Norway in 2026? +
No for EU, UK, US, Canadian and Swiss passport holders. Norway is part of the Schengen area (but not the EU). Valid passport recommended. From the second half of 2026, the European ETIAS system will come into effect: prior online authorisation at €7 for non-EU nationals already visa-exempt, valid 3 years.
How many days do you need in Norway? +
1 week for Bergen and the two UNESCO fjords (Nærøyfjord, Geirangerfjord). 10 days to add Oslo and the Lofoten. 2 weeks to do the Bergen-Kirkenes Hurtigruten or string together fjords + Lofoten + Tromsø. A winter visit for the aurora fits in 6-8 days based out of Tromsø.
When can you see the northern lights in Norway? +
October to March, between 6pm and 1am, on clear skies. Tromsø remains the most reliable base (~70% observation rate over 4 nights, ~90% over 6 nights). Senja, Alta, Lyngenfjord and the Lofoten are excellent alternatives. December-February = full polar night, best darkness.
Is Norway more expensive than Sweden and Finland? +
Yes, noticeably so. Expect roughly 20-30% more than Sweden and 30-40% more than Finland at equivalent comfort. Food, alcohol and transport drive prices up. Tips: Rema 1000 and Kiwi supermarkets, cooking in DNT huts, Vy buses over trains, combined ferry passes.
What transport should I choose: car, train, ferry, Hurtigruten? +
Car for the fjords (Bergen, Geiranger, Ålesund, Atlantic Road). Train for Oslo-Bergen, Oslo-Trondheim and the Flåm Railway (spectacular). Ferries are mandatory in the fjords. Hurtigruten Bergen-Kirkenes to combine coast + small ports in 6 days. Domestic flights (Widerøe, SAS, Norwegian) to save time on the way to the Lofoten or Tromsø.
What's the food like and how much does a restaurant cost? +
Salmon, cod (klippfisk), elk, berries, brunost (brown cheese), waffles. Mains at restaurants €30-45, lunch menus €20-25, hot-dog stands €8-12. Self-catering cuts the food budget by 3. Filter coffee is usually included with hotel breakfasts.
Is alcohol really heavily taxed in Norway? +
Yes. Beer €12-14 a pint at the bar, wine €70-90 a bottle at restaurants, spirits sold only at Vinmonopolet (state monopoly) with limited hours. Buy at Paris airport or Oslo duty-free within the allowance (1 L spirits + 1.5 L wine + 2 L beer per adult).
Is winter driving in Norway risky? +
Studded or winter tyres mandatory from 1 November to the first Monday after Easter (15 October to 30 April in the North). Roads very well cleared, but mountain passes close based on weather (check vegvesen.no). Prefer rentals with winter tyres included + engine heater. Ferries and trains remain safest for long distances between November and March.
