Why visit Iceland

  • 1

The Ring Road, 1,332 km full loop

Route 1 circles the island. Paved, drivable in 4x4 year-round, in 2WD from June to September. 10 to 14 days to complete it comfortably with stops.

  • 2

Northern lights from September to March

Best conditions October to February. KP index on vedur.is and auroraforecast.is. Get away from Reykjavik lights (Þingvellir, Vík, Snæfellsnes). Patience required, 4-5 nights minimum.

  • 3

    Natural hot springs everywhere

Blue Lagoon (expensive, touristy, €70), newer Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik (€60), Mývatn Nature Baths in the North (€45), Reykjadalur hot river free after 1h hike. Over 200 municipal public pools at €5-8.

  • 4

    Geysers, glaciers, waterfalls, active volcanoes

Geysir and Strokkur (erupts every 5-10 min), Gullfoss (32 m drop), Vatnajökull (Europe's largest glacier), Reykjanes peninsula in recurring eruption since 2023. Geological density unique in Europe.

  • 5

    Maximum safety, top infrastructure

Most peaceful country in the world (Global Peace Index 2024). English spoken by everyone, very organised tourist infrastructure. Easy driving in summer. Schengen area: no visa for EU/EEA, ETIAS coming late 2026 for non-EU visa-exempt nationals.

Calendar

When to go to Iceland

Subarctic climate moderated by the Gulf Stream. Summer (June-August) = 20 to 24 hours of daylight (midnight sun), 10-15 °C, Highland roads open, but peak crowds and prices. Winter (October-March) = northern lights, 4 to 7 hours of daylight, snow, softer prices. May and September: the best window for quality/crowds/price.

FAQ

FAQ

Do I need a visa for Iceland in 2026? +
Not for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens. Iceland is part of the Schengen area (without being an EU member). Valid national ID or passport sufficient. For other visa-exempt nationalities, ETIAS (€7, online) will be mandatory from late 2026.
How many days for the Ring Road? +
Minimum 8 days very compressed, 10 to 12 days for a comfortable format with 200-300 km daily stages and time for side trips (Snæfellsnes, Reykjanes peninsula, glaciers, whales). 14 days is ideal to add the Westfjords. The Ring Road is exactly 1,332 km, but with detours and excursions you easily exceed 2,500 km.
When can you see the northern lights in Iceland? +
From late September to late March, with an optimal window October to February. Conditions: clear sky, KP index ≥ 3, away from city lights, new moon period. Plan 4-5 nights minimum, ideally 7+, to maximise chances. Check vedur.is (weather + auroras) and auroraforecast.is. Dead season April to August: nights too bright.
Is driving in Iceland in winter dangerous? +
Tricky but doable with a 4x4 and studded tyres (included November to April). Storm winds, sudden blizzards, icy roads. Check road.is (real-time road conditions) and vedur.is (weather) every morning. Highland roads closed October to June. Ring Road drivable but with temporary closures. When in doubt, stay put: storms pass in 12-24h.
What budget for an Iceland trip? +
Iceland is one of the most expensive countries in Europe. Backpacker: €2,200-2,800 for 10 days (camping + self-cook + shared car). Comfort: €3,500-4,500 for 10 days (guesthouse + restaurants + 4x4). Premium: €8,000-15,000 (design hotels + Dill + helicopter). Restaurant meal €30-50, beer €12, fuel tank €90-120.
Do I need a 4x4 in Iceland? +
Not mandatory June to September for the paved Ring Road and Golden Circle. Essential October to May (ice, snow). Essential year-round for the Highlands (F roads, river fords forbidden in 2WD, rental contract void if violated). Budget €80-150/day for a comfort 4x4 SUV.
What about the Reykjanes peninsula volcanic eruption? +
Since July 2023, the Reykjanes volcanic system has been experiencing recurring eruptions near Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon. Authorities evacuate and close roads case by case. The rest of the island is unaffected. Check safetravel.is before departure and during the trip. The Blue Lagoon has been closed and reopened several times since 2024 depending on activity.
Does tap water and hot water really smell like sulphur? +
Yes. Hot water comes from geothermal sources and gives off a sulphur smell (rotten egg) very noticeable in the shower, harmless. Cold water on the other hand is among the purest in the world (glacier + volcanic rock filtration), no need to buy bottled water. Bring a reusable bottle.
