In brief

Vík in brief

  • 1

    The south coast hub

Vík is the only real town across 200 km of Ring Road: petrol station, supermarket, hotels and restaurants.

  • 2

    Reynisfjara is stunning but dangerous

Sneaker waves surge up without warning and have already been fatal. Never turn your back to the ocean.

  • 3

A stop, not just a photo break

Sleeping in Vík lets you see the nearby waterfalls early, before the Reykjavik buses arrive.

  • 4

Wind and weather set the plan

Gusts can rip car doors open. Check vedur.is and safetravel.is every morning.

  • 5

    Puffins at Dyrhólaey in season

From mid-May to August, the Dyrhólaey arch hosts puffin colonies that are easy to watch.

FAQ

Vík FAQ

Is Reynisfjara beach dangerous? +
Yes. Sneaker waves surge far up the sand without warning and have caused several deaths. Never turn your back to the ocean, stay at least 30 metres from the water and watch children at all times.
How long to spend in Vík? +
One day is enough for Reynisfjara, Dyrhólaey and the nearby waterfalls. Sleeping a night lets you see the sites early, before the Reykjavik buses, and try for the auroras.
When can you see puffins in Vík? +
From mid-May to late August, at Dyrhólaey cape and on the Reynisfjara cliffs. They head back out to sea by late summer. Keep your distance and avoid drones near the colonies.
Do you need a car to visit Vík? +
By far the easiest option: everything runs along Route 1. A few buses link Reykjavik but with little flexibility. Watch the wind, which can rip a door off, so open it facing the wind.
Do you need a visa for Iceland? +
Not for EU nationals: Iceland is in the Schengen area, tourist stay up to 90 days. See our Iceland visa guide.
