The largest village on Iceland's south coast, Vík gathers Reynisfjara black sand beach, its basalt columns, Dyrhólaey cape and its puffins. A key Ring Road stop, here's how to enjoy it safely.

In brief
The south coast hub
Vík is the only real town across 200 km of Ring Road: petrol station, supermarket, hotels and restaurants.
Reynisfjara is stunning but dangerous
Sneaker waves surge up without warning and have already been fatal. Never turn your back to the ocean.
A stop, not just a photo break
Sleeping in Vík lets you see the nearby waterfalls early, before the Reykjavik buses arrive.
Wind and weather set the plan
Gusts can rip car doors open. Check vedur.is and safetravel.is every morning.
Puffins at Dyrhólaey in season
From mid-May to August, the Dyrhólaey arch hosts puffin colonies that are easy to watch.
Must-see
The famous black sand beach, its basalt columns and the Hálsanefshellir cave.
Basalt pinnacles rising from the ocean, visible from Vík beach.
Promontory with a natural arch, lighthouse and puffin colonies from May to August.
The small red and white church on the hill, the gathering point in case of a Katla eruption.
60m-high waterfall, stairs to the top and frequent rainbows. 30 min to the west.
The waterfall you can walk behind. 50 min west of Vík.
Winding 100m-deep gorge with a clifftop path. 1h to the east.
The ice cap covering the Katla volcano, with guided hikes and ice caves.
