The overwater bungalow, invented here
The concept was born in Tahiti in the 1960s before becoming Bora Bora's signature image. A translucent lagoon at 28°C, fish visible from the bed, a private deck: nowhere else replicates it at the same level.
No visa for French citizens
French Polynesia is a French territory: a valid passport is enough (an ID card is not, since the US layover requires one), no visa paperwork, and euros are sometimes accepted alongside the CFP franc.
Swim with humpback whales
From July to November, humpback whales come to give birth in the warm waters of Moorea and Rurutu (the Austral Islands), one of the few places on earth where guided snorkeling encounters are possible.
118 islands across five very different archipelagos
The Society Islands (Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, Huahine) for easy lagoon access, the Tuamotus (Rangiroa, Fakarava) for shark diving, the Marquesas for hiking and Marquesan archaeological sites, the Australs for whale watching.
Heiva i Tahiti, full cultural immersion
Every July, Papeete comes alive with traditional 'ori tahiti dance and singing competitions. The biggest Polynesian cultural event of the year, open to any visitor in town for the period.
Calendar
Tropical climate with two seasons. The dry season (May-October, austral winter) is the most comfortable window: less rain, cooling trade winds, calmer seas for inter-island transfers. The hot, wet season (November-April) brings more frequent showers but remains workable, especially early and late in the season.

By traveler profile
French Polynesia's signature trip. Overwater bungalow in Bora Bora (Conrad Bora Bora Nui, InterContinental Bora Bora Resort & Thalasso Spa, Four Seasons), private dinner on a motu, private boat transfers. Budget €12,000-18,000 for 10-12 days as a couple.
Swim with humpback whales in Moorea or Rurutu (July-November, guided tours mandatory), shark diving in Fakarava (South Pass, UNESCO biosphere reserve), turtles in Bora Bora.
Family guesthouses (fare) in Moorea or Huahine, €80-150/night half-board. Skip overnighting in Bora Bora (visit it as a day trip from Tahiti or Moorea instead). Budget €2,800-3,500 for 12 days excluding the international flight.
Moorea: shallow, safe lagoon, guided activities (rays, turtles), short inter-island flights (10 minutes from Tahiti). Bora Bora remains a feasible day trip but expensive for a full family stay.
Rangiroa and Fakarava (Tuamotus): legendary passes with grey reef and hammerhead sharks in high season (June-October), 30m+ visibility. Advanced certification recommended for the strong-current passes.
The Marquesas (Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva): steep valleys, Marquesan archaeological sites (tiki, petroglyphs), no lagoon but raw, dramatic nature. 4 days minimum, reached by plane or the Aranui mixed cargo ship from Tahiti.
