In brief
The airport is on a motu, not the main island
BOB sits on a separate islet. Every hotel runs its own boat transfer (15-45 min depending on location), usually included in the stay.
Matira, the only real public beach
Bora Bora is ringed with private motus. Matira, at the south of the main island, remains the only freely accessible white-sand beach.
The overwater bungalow has a real price tag
€800 to €3,700/night depending on the resort, +20-35% in high season (July-August). A 4★ option with direct beach access is still available from €200-400/night.
Lagoon tours are the best value
Swimming with rays and blacktip reef sharks, a motu picnic, snorkeling at the Coral Garden. A half-day from €60-90 per person.
Mount Otemanu can't actually be climbed
An extinct 727m volcano with walls too steep for a standard hike. Best seen on a 4x4 tour of its lower slopes, by helicopter, or simply as the lagoon's backdrop.
Must-see
The island's only public white-sand beach, on the south point. Shallow water, ideal for families.
Guided swim with stingrays and blacktip reef sharks, followed by a motu picnic.
A shallow snorkeling spot between two motus, tropical fish and well-preserved coral.
An extinct 727m volcano, the lagoon's iconic silhouette. 4x4 tour of the foothills or views from a boat.
A sand-floored institution famous for its celebrity guestbook since the 1980s.
Boat trip to a deserted islet, swimming and a barefoot lunch in the sand.
Remnants of the US base set up in 1942, still visible on the island's heights.
The ferry hub, grocery stores, a few low-priced local restaurants.
Guided viewing near the motus, one of the island's most requested activities.
A catamaran or traditional outrigger canoe (va'a) trip facing Mount Otemanu.
Choose your district
The main village, affordable guesthouses, ferry departure point. No spectacular lagoon view.
Budget
3-4★ hotels with direct access to the only real public beach. The best price-to-lagoon compromise.

BOB airport sits on a separate motu. Every hotel or guesthouse runs its own boat shuttle, 15 to 45 minutes depending on location.
Bike or scooter
Handy for exploring Vaitape and nearby surroundings without a boat transfer fee.
Boat tours
Essential for the lagoon, the motus and snorkeling. Most activities run through a guided boat trip.
Shuttle or land taxi
Scarce and pricey, mostly useful for reaching Vaitape from a non-motu hotel.
