Adapt by season

Dry season for beaches and roads

This itinerary runs along the south coast (Playa Ancón, Playa Larga) and the long central roads. From November to April: flat sea, clear skies and drivable roads. From May to October, showers build up in September-October, the hurricane peak, when Playa Larga and the Bay of Pigs can close to swimming. In summer, keep swims for the morning and leave a margin on bus trips.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In February 2025 I slept at Playa Larga right after Viñales: the morning swim in the Bay of Pigs, water at 26°C and no one around, is one of the best memories of the trip. One night is enough but it changes the rhythm.
  • The 3 nights in Trinidad: enough for the Valle de los Ingenios, Playa Ancón and salsa nights without rushing.
  • The colectivo over the bus between Cienfuegos, Trinidad and Santa Clara: door to door, faster.
  • Ending with 1 night in Havana rather than dashing to the airport: you get a last dinner.
  • The El Nicho waterfalls from Cienfuegos: cool water, few people in the morning.

⚠️ Would change

  • Cut Cienfuegos to 1 night if you'd rather extend Trinidad.
  • Add Cayo Santa María (postcard beach) after Santa Clara if you have one more day.
  • Don't lock in all the colectivos ahead: hosts arrange them as you go, often cheaper.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Do you need a visa for Cuba? +
Yes, the tourist card is required (about €22 to €35), valid 30 days, so plenty for 14 days. Passport valid 6 months after return.
Is the Viazul bus or the colectivos better? +
The Viazul bus is cheaper and air-conditioned on main routes (Havana, Santa Clara). Between central towns, colectivos are often faster, leave when full and drop you at the casa door.
How much cash should you bring for 2 weeks? +
Bring your entire budget in cash (euros or dollars to exchange), since foreign cards barely work. For a comfort profile, plan €1,200 to €1,500 in cash excluding the flight.
Is the Bay of Pigs worth the detour? +
Yes for snorkeling: coastal cenotes at Cueva de los Peces, reef accessible from the beach at Caleta Buena. One night at Playa Larga is enough to enjoy it in the morning.
What's the best period for this route? +
November to April: flat sea on the south coast, drivable roads, 26 to 30°C. Avoid September-October, hurricane peak, when Playa Larga can close to swimming.
Is this itinerary doable with family? +
Yes with children over 6, by easing the long colectivo days. The beaches (Ancón, Playa Larga, Cayo Jutías) and the Valle de los Ingenios train are big hits with younger ones.
