In brief

Varadero in brief

  • 1

All-inclusive or casa: two different Varaderos

The Punta Hicacos resorts live in a bubble of buffets and private beachfront. The pueblo (calles 13 to 54) lines up casas particulares at €25-40 and paladares. The two combine very well.

  • 2

Carry cash even on an all-inclusive

Tips (€1-2 work wonders), excursions, taxis: everything is settled in cash, and euros are accepted everywhere. The resort-strip ATMs are as temperamental as anywhere in Cuba.

  • 3

Buffets follow the deliveries: adjust expectations

Even at 4-5* level, shortages show at the buffet some nights. The newer resorts at the tip (Meliá, Royalton, Iberostar) cope best. A few paladar dinners in the pueblo rebalance the week.

  • 4

Cayo Blanco catamaran: the excursion worth paying for

A sailing day to a white sandbank, grilled lobster and snorkeling, €60-99 by season. Book through the hotel excursion desk or a site like Civitatis.

  • 5

Havana as a day trip is doable

2h30 by motorway. Organized excursion €70-90, or a negotiated private taxi (~€120-150 per car round trip). Leave before 8am to enjoy the old town.

FAQ

Varadero FAQ

Varadero or the cayos (Cayo Coco, Cayo Santa María)? +
Varadero for accessibility: its own airport, Havana 2h30 away, a real pueblo with casas and paladares to escape the hotel. The cayos for even calmer water and total seclusion, but with nothing around the resorts and long transfers. For a first Cuba trip, Varadero combined with Havana wins.
All-inclusive or casa particular in Varadero? +
A matter of style. The all-inclusive solves logistics in a country running on shortages: a real argument in 2026. A casa (€25-40) brings contact, often better food and half the budget; the public beach is the same for everyone. The good mix: a few casa nights in the pueblo, then finish at a resort.
Is the food good in Varadero's hotels? +
Uneven, and you should know it before booking: the national shortages reach the buffets too, especially mid-range. The newer 5* resorts at Punta Hicacos are the best supplied. The classic letdown: choice shrinking by the end of the week. The pueblo's paladares (€10-15 a meal) more than compensate.
Can you visit Havana from Varadero? +
Yes, easily: 2h30 by motorway. Three options: organized bus excursion (€70-90, guide included), private taxi for the day (€120-150 per car, your own pace), or the Viazul bus (~€10-12, but fixed schedules). Leave before 8am; the old town loses its light after 5pm.
Do you need cash in Varadero? +
Yes, even on an all-inclusive. Tips (€1-2 per service transform the experience), excursions, taxis, paladares: everything runs on cash, and euros are accepted everywhere. Budget €150-300 in cash per week at a resort, double that in a casa. European cards work only intermittently.
When should you avoid Varadero? +
Late August to late October, the heart of hurricane season: real storm risk, saturated humidity and boat trips cancelled at the first warning. December to April brings the calmest sea. May-June and November are good price-weather compromises.
Is there sargassum in Varadero? +
Very little: the peninsula faces the Straits of Florida, to the north, and sits clear of the big sargassum drifts that hit Mexico's Caribbean coast. A few isolated summer landings at most, quickly raked in front of the hotels.
What are the entry requirements for Cuba? +
E-visa (which replaced the tourist card, ~€25-50), the D'Viajeros online form within 7 days of arrival, travel insurance with medical cover (mandatory), passport valid 6 months. Many packages handle the paperwork: check what yours covers. See our [Cuba entry guide](/en/destinations/cuba/practical/visa-cuba/).
