How to get around

Itinerary logistics

In Costa Rica, the rental 4x4 is king: dirt roads, fords and access to remote lodges. Count ~900 km over 14 days, with 2 to 4h legs between stops. A domestic flight back from Osa saves a day.

Adapt by season

Dry season or green season

The dry season (December to April) guarantees clear skies and easy roads, but it's high season and prices rise. The green season (May to November) offers explosive nature and lower rates: it mostly rains in the late afternoon, leaving mornings dry. The Caribbean side (Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo) is drier in September-October, the opposite of the Pacific.

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In March 2025 I booked Manuel Antonio online 4 days ahead: the daily quota was already nearly full by 7am. Reserve your slot as soon as your dates are set, it's mandatory and goes fast.
  • The 4x4 over a sedan: on the Monteverde road and the Osa fords, it changes everything.
  • Corcovado with a local guide: alone you see nothing; he spots tapirs and macaws in 10 minutes.
  • The free Río Chollín hot springs at La Fortuna over Tabacón, same volcanic water.
  • The domestic flight back from Osa: 1h instead of 6h of dirt road, a whole day saved.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip San José on arrival and sleep straight in Alajuela, near the airport.
  • Add a night in Uvita for the Nauyaca waterfall on horseback.
  • Cut Manuel Antonio to 2 days if you'd rather spend more time in Osa.
  • Do Monteverde before Arenal if you arrive in the rainy season (safer roads in the morning).

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Do you need a 4x4 in Costa Rica? +
Strongly recommended. The Monteverde road and the access to the Osa Peninsula include dirt tracks and fords. A 4x4 gives you access to everything stress-free, especially in the green season.
Do you need to book national park entry? +
For Manuel Antonio, yes, it's mandatory online with a daily quota. Corcovado requires a certified guide. Book as soon as your dates are set.
What's the best time? +
December to April (dry season) for clear skies. The green season (May-November) offers lusher nature, lower prices and rain mostly in the late afternoon.
Can you see whales in Uvita? +
Yes, the Marino Ballena park hosts humpback whales from July to October and December to March. It's one of the longest whale-watching cycles in the world.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes, by lightening Corcovado (demanding jungle). Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio are perfect for kids: sloths, hanging bridges, calm beaches.
What budget should I plan for two weeks? +
Count €2,000 in backpacker mode (cabinas, sodas, shared car), €2,600 in comfort (3★ lodges, own 4x4), flight from Europe included. Park guides and the 4x4 rental are the key costs.
