Adapt by season

Juggling Caribbean and Pacific

Costa Rica has two opposite seasons depending on the coast. The Pacific is dry from December to April; the Caribbean (Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo) is milder in September-October, in the heart of the Pacific green season. Over a month, that's the advantage: start with the drier coast at the time of travel and finish with the other. January-March stays the best overall compromise.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In January 2025 I started with the Caribbean (drier at that time) before switching to the Pacific: zero rain the whole month, when the reverse would have soaked me. Setting the order of the coasts to the season is the real secret of the full month.
  • The 4x4 rented monthly works out far cheaper than weekly, and it serves everywhere.
  • Tortuguero by kayak at dawn: the canals are empty and the wildlife comes out.
  • The domestic flight from Osa to Nicoya: you avoid going back via San José and 8h of road.
  • Finishing in Santa Teresa: surf, sunsets and yoga, perfect to unwind after Corcovado.

⚠️ Would change

  • Cut Puerto Viejo to 3 days if you prefer more time in Osa.
  • Add Bahía Drake in a remote lodge for one more night in the jungle.
  • Avoid timing the month exactly in the Pacific rainy season (May-November) without reversing the order of the coasts.
  • Swap a central-valley volcano for a rest day on arrival.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is a month too much for Costa Rica? +
No. A month lets you do both coasts without rushing: Caribbean (Tortuguero, Puerto Viejo) and Pacific (Manuel Antonio, Osa, Nicoya), with time to watch wildlife and vary habitats. It's the ideal format for a full tour.
How do you handle the opposite seasons of the two coasts? +
Start with the drier coast at the time of your trip. In January-March, the Pacific is at its best; in September-October, do the Caribbean first. Adapting the order avoids the rain.
Do you need a 4x4 for a month? +
Yes. Between Monteverde, the Osa Peninsula and some Nicoya tracks, the 4x4 is essential. A monthly rental is much cheaper than weekly.
How do you reach Tortuguero? +
Only by boat or plane: there's no road. You leave the car at a guarded car park then reach the village via the canals.
Can you do this month on public transport? +
Partly, via public buses and tourist shuttles, but Osa, Monteverde and some Nicoya beaches stay hard without a vehicle. A 4x4 is still strongly advised.
What budget for a month? +
Count €3,800 in backpacker mode, €4,800 in comfort (3★ lodges, own 4x4), flight from Europe included. Parks, guides, boats and the long-term rental are the key costs.
