Adapt by season

Dry season for the roads

In one week, the dry season (December-April) eases the Monteverde road and guarantees clear skies over Arenal. In the green season, drive in the morning (rain late in the day) and keep afternoons for parks and beaches.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In February 2025, Manuel Antonio booked online the day before was already nearly full: reserve your entry slot as soon as your dates are set, the quota goes fast.
  • The 4x4 for the Monteverde road, calmer than a sedan.
  • The free Río Chollín hot springs over Tabacón, same volcanic water.
  • Monteverde at opening, at 6am: the mist and quetzals before the crowd.

⚠️ Would change

  • Add a night in Manuel Antonio to really enjoy the beaches.
  • Cut a day at Arenal if you prefer Monteverde.
  • Do Monteverde before Arenal in the rainy season (safer roads).

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Is one week enough in Costa Rica? +
Yes for a first taste: this itinerary covers Arenal volcano, the cloud forest and the Pacific. It leaves out the Osa Peninsula and the Caribbean coast, best saved for 2 weeks or more.
Do you need a 4x4? +
Recommended. The Monteverde road has dirt tracks. A 4x4 avoids any stress, especially in the green season.
Do you need to book park entry? +
For Manuel Antonio, yes, it's mandatory online with a daily quota. Book as soon as your dates are set.
What's the best time? +
December to April for clear skies and easy roads. The green season (May-November) stays pleasant by driving in the morning.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes, perfectly: sloths at Arenal, hanging bridges at Monteverde, calm beaches at Manuel Antonio. Short legs and easy wildlife to spot.
What budget for one week? +
Count €1,300 in backpacker mode, €1,600 in comfort (3★ lodges, own 4x4), flight from Europe included. The 4x4 and guides are the key costs.
