In brief

Monteverde in brief

  • 1

Pack warm layers and a windbreaker

At 1,400 m and above, Monteverde surprises: 15-18°C mornings, sideways mist and strong winds December to February. Fleece and rain shell are non-negotiable.

  • 2

Pick your reserve: Monteverde or Santa Elena

Monteverde ($25-29) for maximum biodiversity and groomed trails. Santa Elena ($18) for a mistier, quieter and cheaper forest.

  • 3

Book a guide and the first morning slot

The wildlife hides: a naturalist guide with a scope (~$25-30) multiplies sightings tenfold. First slot 7am, before the groups.

  • 4

    February-June for the resplendent quetzal

Nesting season is when the long-plumed male shows himself. Curi-Cancha and the Monteverde reserve are the top spots.

  • 5

The last few km are still gravel

Route 606 is paved to Santa Elena, but several hotels and reserves sit at the end of rough tracks. A 4x4 is no longer essential, just more comfortable.

FAQ

Monteverde FAQ

Monteverde or Santa Elena reserve: which one? +
Monteverde ($25-29 depending on circuit) is the historic reserve: maximum biodiversity, impeccable trails and boardwalks, more guides and more people. Santa Elena ($18), community-run, sits higher, mistier and noticeably quieter, with Arenal views on clear days. The ideal 2-day plan: one with a guide, the other on your own. Curi-Cancha rounds it out for birds.
When and where can you see a quetzal in Monteverde? +
February to June, during nesting, peaking in March-April: males parade with meter-long tail plumes. The best spots are Curi-Cancha and the Monteverde reserve, early morning around wild avocado trees. With a birding guide carrying a scope, in-season sighting odds run well above 50%.
How many days should you stay in Monteverde? +
Two full days cover the essentials: one reserve with a guide on the first morning, hanging bridges and zipline on day two, plus a night walk. A third day adds Curi-Cancha at dawn, the Santa Elena reserve or a coffee-cacao tour without rushing.
Do you need a 4x4 to reach Monteverde? +
Not really anymore: Route 606 from the Pan-American Highway is paved to Santa Elena. Rough gravel remains on the way to some hotels, Curi-Cancha, San Luis and the Santa Elena reserve. An SUV is enough in the dry season; a 4x4 stays more comfortable from May to November. Without a car, shuttles and taxis cover everything.
What's the weather like in Monteverde? +
Cool and changeable: 15-18°C mornings, 20-25°C afternoons, trade-wind mist and sometimes fierce winds from December to February. Rain is possible all year (it's a cloud forest), with a clear peak in September-October. Fleece, waterproof windbreaker and walking shoes are the three essentials.
Should you book activities in advance? +
In high season (December-April and July-August), yes: morning guided slots in the reserves, Curi-Cancha (capped numbers) and zipline-plus-bridges combos go fast. 48 h ahead is usually enough, via official sites or your hotel. In the green season, the day before will do.
Is Monteverde worth it with kids? +
Yes, it's one of the country's most family-friendly stops: easy hanging bridges, hummingbirds at arm's length, chocolate and sugarcane tours, ziplines from age 4-5 on some courses (tandem with a guide). Just pack warm clothes — the one thing nobody expects in the tropics.
Do you need a visa for Costa Rica? +
No for French and EU nationals: up to 180 days visa-free with a valid passport and proof of onward travel. See our [Costa Rica visa guide](/en/destinations/costa-rica/practical/visa-costa-rica/) for other nationalities.
