The essentials

When to go to Albania, in brief

🟢

May-June and Sept-Oct: the sweet spot

20 to 28°C, sea still or already warm, uncrowded sites and soft prices. The best balance of the year.

🏖️

The Riviera in summer

June to September, sea at 21-26°C. July-August hit 35°C: great for the beach, but Ksamil and Dhërmi overflow.

🏔️

The Albanian Alps

Theth, Valbona and Lake Koman can be hiked June to September. Cooler than the coast, trails crowded in August.

🍂

September, the smart month

Sea still at 24°C, heat eased, crowds gone. My favorite slot to combine Riviera and historic towns.

🌧️

Winter, mild but wet

Coast around 10-15°C, rainy; mountains snowed under. Tirana and Berat stay doable, the Riviera sleeps.

🎶

Festivals on the Riviera

Kala and Sundance light up the beaches in June-July. Independence Day falls on 28 November.

Our analysis

Albania plays a simple hand: an affordable Adriatic Riviera paired with dramatic mountains. The golden rule: aim for the shoulder seasons, May-June and September-October, to enjoy it all without the summer furnace or crowds.

May-June and September-October, the fine window

This is the prime window. Temperatures sit between 20 and 28°C, the sea stays swimmable, and the historic sites (Berat, Gjirokastër, Butrint) can be toured without sweating. In May the countryside is green and in bloom. In September the water holds 24°C while the holidaymakers have left. My firm take: if you could pick only one month, make it September.

Summer on the Riviera

July and August offer ideal swimming, up to 35°C and a 26°C sea. But Ksamil, Dhërmi and Saranda overflow, prices climb, and the interior (Tirana, Berat) can hit 38°C. It is also beach-festival season, with Kala and Sundance. Book early and favor mornings for the sites.

Mountains and winter

The Albanian Alps, around Theth and Valbona, can be hiked June to September, cooler than the coast. The rest of the year, snow closes the trails. In winter the coast stays mild but rainy and the seaside resorts sleep. You then visit Tirana, Berat and the quiet towns, not the beach.
