In brief

Ushuaia, Argentina in brief

  • 1

    Come in the southern summer

October to March: 17-18 hours of daylight, open trails, daily cruises and penguins on Isla Martillo. In peak summer, book lodging and excursions 2-3 months ahead.

  • 2

    Sail the Beagle Channel

The classic outing (2h30-3h) passes the sea lion island and Les Eclaireurs lighthouse, ~105,000 ARS (~€65). The long version adds the Isla Martillo penguin colony (Oct-Apr).

  • 3

Tierra del Fuego park, with or without the train

Entry costs ~40,000 ARS for foreigners. The End of the World Train (US$40-85) is scenic but covers only 7 km: the Senda Costera, free once inside, is the real gem.

  • 4

    Hike to Laguna Esmeralda

The star hike outside the park: 9 km round trip to a turquoise lagoon below the glaciers, free, muddy, 4-5 h. Waterproof boots are non-negotiable.

  • 5

The end of the world has end-of-world prices

Ushuaia is one of Argentina's priciest cities: expect 30-50% above Buenos Aires for lodging and food. The centolla (king crab) is worth the splurge.

FAQ

Ushuaia, Argentina FAQ

How many days do you need in Ushuaia and Tierra del Fuego? +
Three full days cover the national park, a Beagle Channel cruise and a hike (Laguna Esmeralda or the Martial Glacier). A fourth day adds lakes Escondido and Fagnano or the Isla Martillo penguins. Most travelers fold Ushuaia into a Patagonia loop with El Calafate.
When is the best time to visit Ushuaia? +
The southern summer, October to March: 17-18 hours of daylight, snow-free trails, daily cruises and an active penguin colony on Isla Martillo (October-April). December-February is peak season, so book early. Winter (June-September) draws skiers and dog-sledding fans to Cerro Castor.
How much is the Tierra del Fuego National Park entrance? +
Around 40,000 ARS (~€25) for foreign visitors in 2026, payable at the gate or online. The ticket lets you re-enter the next day (tell the ranger). The shuttle from downtown costs ~20,000 ARS return. The End of the World Train is extra (US$40-85) and does not include park entry.
Is the Beagle Channel cruise worth it? +
Yes, it is Ushuaia's signature experience. The classic 2h30-3h outing (~105,000 ARS, about €65) skirts the sea lion and cormorant islands out to Les Eclaireurs lighthouse. From October to April, the long version (~250,000 ARS) adds the Isla Martillo penguin colony; Piratour also offers a walk among the penguins (small quota, book early).
Can you get a last-minute Antarctica cruise from Ushuaia? +
Yes, between November and March. Agencies on San Martín street sell unsold cabins on departures within 2 to 15 days, from ~US$5,000-6,000 for 10-11 days on the Antarctic Peninsula, 30-50% below brochure rates. You need flexible dates and your own gear. Expect double that when booking ahead.
Why is Ushuaia called the end of the world? +
It is the world's southernmost city (54°48' South), on the Beagle Channel, the last urban stop before Antarctica. Ruta 3, which starts in Buenos Aires 3,079 km north, dead-ends in the national park at Lapataia Bay. The 'fin del mundo' nickname became the town's brand, from the train to the lighthouse.
Is Ushuaia cold in summer? +
Cool rather than cold: 5 to 15°C in January, with wind that can change everything within the hour. The three-layer rule applies, a waterproof windbreaker lives in your pack at all times, plus hat and gloves, even at the height of the southern summer. The sun bites at this latitude, so pack sunscreen too.
