In brief

Rio de Janeiro in brief

  • 1

    Book Christ the Redeemer online

The Corcovado cog train costs R$109-134 (~€18-22) depending on season, with a timed slot. Go before 9am or after 4pm to dodge both the crowds and the midday haze.

  • 2

    Sugarloaf at sunset

The cable car (Bondinho) costs ~R$190 (~€30) online. Ride up 1h30 before sunset: Guanabara Bay turns gold, and you descend over a city of lights.

  • 3

    Stay in the Zona Sul

Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana or Botafogo: safe, beachside and metro-connected. Avoid Centro at night, it empties out after office hours.

  • 4

Do the beach like a carioca

Bring the bare minimum: a canga (sarong), small cash, no phone on display. Everything is rented or sold on the sand: chair R$10, umbrella R$10, caipirinha R$15-20.

  • 5

    Uber over street taxis

Uber and 99 are everywhere, reliable and cheap (Zona Sul rides R$15-30). After dark, it's safety rule number one, even for a 10-minute hop.

FAQ

Rio de Janeiro FAQ

How many days do you need in Rio de Janeiro? +
Three full days cover Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, Santa Teresa and a night out in Lapa. A fourth day adds a hike (Pedra Bonita) or a trip to Niterói or Petrópolis. Plan a week if you combine Rio with Búzios or Ilha Grande.
Is Rio de Janeiro safe for tourists? +
Rio calls for awareness, not paranoia. In the Zona Sul (Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana, Botafogo) the main risks are phone snatching and beach pickpockets. The rules that change everything: no phone on display in the street, bare minimum on the beach, Uber after dark, skip the deserted Centro at night and never enter a favela without an organized guide.
When is Rio Carnival 2027? +
Carnival 2027 runs February 5-10, with the Grupo Especial parades at the Sambadrome on February 7, 8 and 9 and the Champions Parade on Saturday, February 13. Street blocos start in mid-January. Book lodging and tickets 6 months ahead; prices triple over the period.
How do you get up to Christ the Redeemer? +
Three options: the Corcovado cog train (R$109-134 depending on season, 20 minutes through the forest, the most scenic), official vans from Copacabana or the Paineiras visitor center (slightly cheaper), or the hike from Parque Lage (2 hours, free but steep, go in a group). Booking a timed slot online is strongly advised.
Which is the best beach in Rio? +
Ipanema for the scene and the setting, with the Dois Irmãos peaks as a backdrop; posto 9 is its heart. Copacabana for the myth and the promenade. Leblon for a calmer, family swim. Prainha and Grumari, 45 minutes west, for wild scenery and the best surf.
Card or cash in Rio, and how many reais to carry? +
Cards work almost everywhere, including with beach vendors carrying terminals. Keep R$100-200 in cash for small buys and markets. €1 is worth about R$6.2 (mid-2026). Withdraw at Banco do Brasil or Bradesco ATMs inside branches, never on the street at night.
Do you need a visa for Brazil? +
Not for French and most EU nationals: 90 days visa-free with a passport valid 6 months beyond entry. See our [Brazil entry requirements guide](/en/destinations/brazil/practical/visa-brazil/) for details and other nationalities.
