Our analysis
Chile stretches over 4,300 km, from the world’s driest desert to the glaciers of Patagonia. So there is no single best time, but one per region. The rule: pick your goal first, then your month.
Patagonia: the austral summer, November to March
This is the only real window for the South and Torres del Paine. The austral summer brings long days, open trails and temperatures of 7 to 18°C. Be warned: even at the height of summer, the wind blows hard and the weather can string together rain, sun and snow in a single day. Book early, sometimes up to six months ahead for the W circuit refuges. By contrast, from June to August the region closes: cold, snow and halted services.
The Atacama and the Center: their own calendars
The Atacama Desert can be visited year-round. Days stay clear and warm, around 20-25°C, nights cold, ideal for watching the planet’s purest sky. The one nuance: January and February can bring rare showers, the Bolivian winter.
Santiago and the vineyards are at their best in spring (September-November) and autumn (March-May), with mild warmth and fewer crowds. March is also the month of the Vendimia, the wine harvest festival. To combine Patagonia, the Atacama and Santiago in a single trip, November stays the best compromise: it is the month when the whole country is doable.
