Adapt by season

Istria in spring, islands in high summer

Over a month, green Istria (Rovinj, Pula) and the inland parks (Plitvice, Krka) are best enjoyed in spring and early autumn, with empty trails and full waterfalls. The southern islands want a warm sea, so rather June to September. To cross both without the crush, go in June or September. Inter-island links (Vis, Mljet) thin out off season: check catamaran timetables before locking in those stops.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In September 2022, the catamaran serving Vis ran only twice a day, and the afternoon one skipped a call for lack of passengers. On remote islands like Vis, set your dates around the catamaran timetable, not the reverse, and keep a buffer day.
  • Istria as the opener, still green and cool, before the southern Dalmatian heat.
  • Vis, the island that stayed wild because it was long closed to foreigners: the Blue Cave of Biševo and Stiniva bay are worth the detour.
  • Mljet as the penultimate stop, a nature and salt-lake interlude just before the buzz of Dubrovnik.

⚠️ Would change

  • Skip Vis if your dates fall off season: catamarans thin out and the island can trap you.
  • Swap one night in Zagreb for the Rastoke falls, on the road to Plitvice.
  • Add a trip to Montenegro (Kotor) from Dubrovnik if the border tempts you.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Do I need a car for this full month? +
Yes for Istria, the parks and the northern coast, scattered and poorly linked. Return it at Split: the southern islands run on foot-passenger catamarans, far cheaper than vehicle ferries.
Isn't a month too much for Croatia? +
No, the country blends Italianate Istria, inland parks, the Dalmatian coast and a dozen islands. A month lets you explore remote islands like Vis, impossible to fit in two weeks.
Are the inter-island catamarans reliable? +
In high season, yes, with several departures a day. Off season (October-May), links to Vis and Mljet thin out: check the Jadrolinija and Krilo timetables before locking in those stops.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes over a month, the pace stays relaxed. The parks, coves and the cycling on Mljet please children. Bring water shoes for the pebble beaches.
What is the best time to go? +
June and September, to cross Istria and the parks without crowds and enjoy a warm sea on the islands. July-August are hot and packed, especially in Dubrovnik and Hvar.
How much does a full month in Croatia cost? +
Around €2,800 backpacker, €3,600 comfort and €6,600 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
