FAQ

Luxor FAQ

How many days to visit Luxor? +
Two days cover Karnak, Luxor Temple (east bank) and the Valley of the Kings plus Hatshepsut (west bank). Three days to add the Valley of the Queens with Nefertari, Medinet Habu and a felucca sunset. Four days to push on to Dendera or Abydos.
When should you book the Luxor hot-air balloon? +
2 to 3 days ahead on site via your hotel or directly through an agency (Sindbad, Magic Horizon, Sky Cruise). €60 to €100 depending on season, hotel transfer included. Takeoff 1 hour before sunrise, 45-min flight. Cancellation possible if winds are too high, full refund.
Which tombs to choose in the Valley of the Kings? +
The standard ticket covers 3 tombs among those open (rotation preserves the paintings). The premium add-ons are worth it: Tutankhamun (700 EGP, more for history than beauty), Seti I (1,800 EGP, the largest and best painted), Ramses VI (200 EGP, astronomical ceiling). Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens remains the finest Egyptian painting preserved.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in Luxor? +
East-bank corniche for the Nile view and proximity to Luxor Temple. East-bank center for budget and the station. West bank in the villages near the Colossi for authenticity and quiet, but ferry transfers. South east bank for upscale resorts (Winter Palace, Hilton).
How do you get from Cairo to Luxor? +
Three options: direct flight on Egyptair or Nile Air in 1h (€80-150 one-way), Watania or ENR sleeper train in 10h (~€80 first-class cabin), or road 7-8h (not recommended, long and uninteresting). The train is romantic but book 2 weeks ahead; the plane saves time.
Do you need a visa for Luxor? +
Yes for French and most EU travelers: e-visa online at 25 USD, valid 30 days and usable at any Egypt entry point. Luxor Airport also issues visa-on-arrival at the same rate. See our [Egypt visa guide](/en/destinations/egypt/practical/visa-egypt/) for details.
