Perched on the cliffs of a volcanic caldera, Santorini lines up white villages with blue domes, Oia sunsets, black-sand beaches and assyrtiko vineyards. Here's how to enjoy it without the crowds in 2 or 3 days.

In brief
Book caldera hotels very early
Caldera-view rooms in Oia and Imerovigli sell out months ahead and cost a lot. Book without waiting.
Avoid July and August
Crowds and prices spike in high summer. April-June and September-October offer the same light without the crush.
Oia's sunset is packed
Arrive 90 minutes early for a spot, or watch it from Imerovigli or the castle ruins, both far calmer.
Unique volcanic beaches
Black sand at Kamari and Perissa, red cliffs at Red Beach. These are not your classic Greek postcard beaches.
Rent a quad or a car
Buses link the villages but schedules are limited. A quad or car gives full freedom for the day.
Must-see
The iconic blue-domed village perched atop the caldera. Legendary sunsets.
The clifftop main town: lanes, view cafes and museums. The island's lively heart.
The Fira-to-Oia trail follows the ridge for 10 km, with sweeping views over the Aegean.
Long beaches of black volcanic sand and pebbles, lined with tavernas and sun loungers.
Dramatic cove framed by rust-red cliffs, near Akrotiri. A photo spot.
A Bronze Age city frozen by an eruption, nicknamed the Pompeii of the Aegean.
Terraced estates produce the island's volcanic white wine. Tastings facing the sea.
Warm sulphur springs at the foot of the Nea Kameni volcano, reached by boat.
The ride down from Fira to the old port, an alternative to the 587 steps and donkeys.
