In brief

Santorini in brief

  • 1

    Book caldera hotels very early

Caldera-view rooms in Oia and Imerovigli sell out months ahead and cost a lot. Book without waiting.

  • 2

    Avoid July and August

Crowds and prices spike in high summer. April-June and September-October offer the same light without the crush.

  • 3

    Oia's sunset is packed

Arrive 90 minutes early for a spot, or watch it from Imerovigli or the castle ruins, both far calmer.

  • 4

    Unique volcanic beaches

Black sand at Kamari and Perissa, red cliffs at Red Beach. These are not your classic Greek postcard beaches.

  • 5

Rent a quad or a car

Buses link the villages but schedules are limited. A quad or car gives full freedom for the day.

FAQ

Santorini FAQ

How many days to visit Santorini? +
Two days cover Oia, Fira, the caldera trail, the black beaches and Akrotiri. A third day allows a boat trip to the Nea Kameni volcano and the hot springs, or a hop to a nearby island.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in Santorini? +
Oia and Imerovigli for caldera views and quiet, though pricey. Fira for central life and nightlife. Kamari or Perissa, on the black-beach side, for a gentler budget and a family feel.
Should you avoid July and August in Santorini? +
Yes if possible. The island is packed then and prices climb sharply. April-June and September-October offer the same light and pleasant warmth with far fewer people.
How do you get around Santorini without a car? +
The KTEL bus links Fira to villages and beaches for a few euros, but all routes pass through Fira and schedules are spaced out. For more freedom, rent a quad or a car, booking early in high season.
Do you need a visa for Santorini? +
No for French and EU nationals: Greece is in the Schengen Area. A valid ID card or passport is enough. See our Greece visa guide.
