How to get around

Itinerary logistics

Rajasthan is best covered with a private driver (~€32/day all-in) over 14 days, given the distances between cities. Night trains also link the main stops (Jodhpur-Jaisalmer). For the long final leg Jaisalmer-Udaipur, a domestic flight via Jodhpur saves half a day.

Adapt by season

The desert prefers winter

This circuit crosses the Thar Desert (Jaisalmer), at its best from November to February: cool nights, days of 22-26 °C, ideal for camping under the stars. From April to June Rajasthan turns scorching (45 °C), so avoid the desert. From July to September a light monsoon greens the south (Udaipur) but stays low-key in Rajasthan. December-January: pack a fleece for the desert nights.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In December 2023 I camped in the Sam dunes near Jaisalmer: a dry cold at night, a total starry sky and Rajasthani folk music around the fire, the memory that marked the whole trip.
  • Jodhpur's Mehrangarh Fort with the audioguide: one of the best-narrated in India, you spend hours there.
  • Sleeping in the inhabited fort of Jaisalmer rather than in town: waking up inside a golden-sandstone citadel.
  • Sunset over Jodhpur's blue houses from a rooftop café, masala chai in hand.

⚠️ Would change

  • Take the domestic flight for Jaisalmer-Udaipur (8 h by road otherwise) if the budget allows.
  • One night at Pushkar is enough, except during the November camel fair.
  • Book AC night trains well ahead on IRCTC, they sell out fast in high season.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

Two weeks in India, should I stay in Rajasthan? +
Yes, it's the most coherent choice. Rajasthan offers forts, palaces, desert and lakes on a logical circuit. Adding the South or Varanasi over 14 days would lose the trip to trains and planes.
Do I need a private driver for Rajasthan? +
It's the most comfortable given the distances between cities (~€32/day all-in). Night trains are a good budget alternative on some legs (Jodhpur-Jaisalmer). Book AC classes ahead.
Is camping in the desert worth it? +
Yes, it's a highlight. The Sam dunes near Jaisalmer offer camel safari, sunset and a night under the stars. Choose a camp with a limited number of tents to avoid the factory feel.
Is this itinerary family-friendly? +
Yes with a private driver. Forts, camels and lake boats delight children. The long roads are manageable by breaking up the stages. Watch food hygiene and the daytime heat.
When is the best time to go? +
November to February: mild days (22-26 °C), cool desert nights (pack a fleece). April-June is scorching (45 °C). The monsoon stays low-key in Rajasthan.
How much do two weeks in India cost all-in? +
Budget about €1,500 backpacking, €2,000 in comfort and €4,200 premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
