Bali Ngurah Rai, the most used gateway

Ngurah Rai International Airport (code DPS), located in Denpasar, remains the near-universal entry point for the vast majority of Western travelers heading to Indonesia. Just 13 km from downtown Denpasar, plan 20 to 40 minutes of travel depending on traffic and your final destination on the island (Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud or Uluwatu).

Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, the national hub

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (code CGK) remains the country’s largest, located about 20-29 km from downtown Jakarta depending on the reference point used. A direct rail connection, the Airport Rail Link, connects the airport to downtown in about 55 minutes, a reliable alternative to a car trip that can take longer given the Indonesian capital’s dense traffic.

Yogyakarta, access to central Java

Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), located in Kulon Progo, replaced the old Adisutjipto airport in March 2020. It sits about 45 km southwest of downtown, with a trip of 1h to 1h30 depending on traffic, which can stretch by 30 extra minutes at peak hours (7-9 AM and 4-6 PM). Train and bus connections are available from the airport.

Lombok, the gateway to the Gili Islands

Praya airport (code LOP) serves Lombok island, about 24 km and 40 minutes from downtown Mataram. This airport is the most convenient entry point for reaching the Gili Islands, prized for diving and snorkeling, via a fast boat connection from Lombok’s ports.

Getting around from the airport

Three main options at Indonesian airports:

• Booked transfer: through your hotel or villa, often the most practical solution for a first trip

No direct flight from Europe
