In brief
Two to three days, no less
Count 2 days for the must-sees (Fushimi Inari, Kinkaku-ji, Arashiyama, Gion). 3 days to add Nara or Osaka.
Starting early changes everything
Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama are empty before 8am and fill up fast. The best photos come at first light.
Buses before metro
Kyoto is mostly visited by city bus, backed by two metro lines. An ICOCA card makes every trip easy.
Respect Gion and the geishas
No close-up photos of geiko without consent, some private alleys are off-limits. Watch, don't harass.
Kyoto pairs up easily
Nara (deer and Great Buddha) is 45 min away, Osaka 15 min by fast train. Perfect for one or two extra days.
Must-see
Thousands of vermilion torii climbing the mountain. Magical before 8am, free and open 24/7.
Gold-leaf-covered pavilion mirrored in its pond. The most famous image of Kyoto.
The giant bamboo grove, the zen Tenryu-ji temple and the Togetsukyo bridge. Best early morning.
Wooden alleys, tea houses and geiko sightings at dusk. Postcard Kyoto.
Stilted temple with city views, at the top of cobbled lanes (Sannenzaka) full of shops.
Kyoto's kitchen over 400m: tofu, pickles, skewers, matcha tea. To snack on while walking.
The Silver Pavilion and its moss garden, then a canal-side walk lined with cherry trees.
Shogun residence, famous for its 'nightingale' floors that chirp underfoot. UNESCO site.
Striking modern architecture, panoramic terrace and restaurants. The starting point for all buses.
1,001 gilded Kannon statues lined up in Japan's longest wooden building. Striking.
