In brief
Book the Ivato airport transfer in advance
Airport sits 16 km from downtown, 30 to 45 min drive depending on traffic. ~200,000 MGA (€40) for a private taxi, pre-book to avoid bargaining on a night arrival.
Stay in the Haute Ville for views and quiet
Historic district around the Rova, paved lanes, panoramas of the lower town. Safer on foot at night than the Analakely streets. From €35/night in a guesthouse.
Visit the Rova (Manjakamiadana) in the morning
Queen's Palace, under restoration since the 1995 fire. 25,000 MGA (€5). Best light in the morning, clear view over the twelve hills of the Imerina.
Carry small-denomination cash
Cards accepted in a few upscale hotels and restos, but the country runs on cash. ATMs in Analakely and Ivandry. Common cap of 400,000 MGA per withdrawal.
Antimalarial treatment recommended
Tana sits high (1,280 m), low but real risk in the rainy season. Low-lying coasts (Nosy Be, east) are confirmed malaria zones. Travel-clinic consultation before departure.
Must-see
Manjakamiadana, the former Merina royal residence on the highest hill. Still under restoration after the 1995 fire, sweeping view over Tana.
Former prime minister's palace, 5 min walk from the Rova. Museum of royal treasures saved from the fire: crowns, jewelry, costumes.
The big central market, heir to the historic Zoma. Spices, vanilla, crafts, fruit. A lively district but watch for pickpockets.
The central artery of Analakely, colonial façades and arcades. Soarano train station at one end, town hall at the other. Walk it by day.
Heart-shaped lake below the Haute Ville, war memorial in the middle. Pleasant lap by day, avoid at night.
The capital's zoo and botanical garden: lemurs, endemic birds, baobabs. A condensed Malagasy fauna for those who won't head south.
Neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral on the heights, a short walk from the Rova. Adjacent square with a panoramic view of the lower town.
Northern peri-urban district, terraced rice paddies still visible from above. Easy green getaway by taxi.
The sacred hill of the Imerina, former royal capital 20 km away. UNESCO-listed site, royal tombs, red-stone fortifications.
Andravoahangy, the crafts hub: marquetry, embroidery, basketry, wood carving. Prices negotiable, quality variable, dig in.

Lively Indo-Muslim district near Analakely, South-Indian restos, small hotels. Central but noisy. From €25/night.
Central
Southern outskirts, quieter, near the RN 7 to Antsirabe. Handy for whoever chains south. From €40/night.
Quiet
Getting around
Taxi (yellow or beige)
No meter, fare agreed before boarding. City rides 10,000 to 25,000 MGA (€2-5). Double at night. Prefer hotel taxis.
Taxi-be (minibus)
Local transport, cheap but packed and slow. 500 to 1,500 MGA a ride. For the experience, not to save time with luggage.
Flybus airport shuttle
Ivato-Analakely service every hour by day, ~4,900 MGA. The cheap option to the airport, but slow and unreliable at night.
On foot (Haute Ville only)
Walking works on the Haute Ville by day. Avoid downtown at night and lower-income districts without a local guide.
