In brief

Antananarivo in brief

  • 1

Book the Ivato airport transfer in advance

Airport sits 16 km from downtown, 30 to 45 min drive depending on traffic. ~200,000 MGA (€40) for a private taxi, pre-book to avoid bargaining on a night arrival.

  • 2

Stay in the Haute Ville for views and quiet

Historic district around the Rova, paved lanes, panoramas of the lower town. Safer on foot at night than the Analakely streets. From €35/night in a guesthouse.

  • 3

Visit the Rova (Manjakamiadana) in the morning

Queen's Palace, under restoration since the 1995 fire. 25,000 MGA (€5). Best light in the morning, clear view over the twelve hills of the Imerina.

  • 4

    Carry small-denomination cash

Cards accepted in a few upscale hotels and restos, but the country runs on cash. ATMs in Analakely and Ivandry. Common cap of 400,000 MGA per withdrawal.

  • 5

    Antimalarial treatment recommended

Tana sits high (1,280 m), low but real risk in the rainy season. Low-lying coasts (Nosy Be, east) are confirmed malaria zones. Travel-clinic consultation before departure.

FAQ

Antananarivo FAQ

Is Antananarivo dangerous for travelers? +
The capital requires vigilance without being off-limits. Pickpockets common in Analakely and around the market, motorbike snatch-thefts reported. Simple rules: no visible jewelry, no phone out in the street, no walking after dark outside the Haute Ville. Book transfers via your hotel or a known operator.
How many days to visit Tana? +
One day for the Haute Ville and the Rova is enough for the time-pressed; two days add Ambohimanga and the markets in comfort. Tana is mostly a hub: most travelers spend one or two nights before pushing to Andasibe, the south or Nosy Be.
Do you need a visa for Madagascar in 2026? +
Yes for French and most EU travelers: e-visa online or visa on arrival at Ivato. Since February 2026, the 15-day visa is around €30 / $35 USD. The 30-day stays around €35. The 90-day around €100-110. Check official rates on evisamada-mg.com before departure, international card payment.
Is malaria a risk in Antananarivo? +
Tana sits at altitude (1,280 m), malaria risk is low but not zero in the rainy season. The low-lying coasts, however, are confirmed malaria zones (Nosy Be, east, west). Systematic prophylaxis for anyone heading to lower altitudes or the coasts. Travel-clinic consultation 4 to 6 weeks before departure.
How do you reach downtown from Ivato airport? +
Three options: Flybus shuttle (4,900 MGA, ~1h, daytime only), pre-booked private taxi (~200,000 MGA, 30-45 min), or hotel transfer often included with multi-night stays. Avoid haggling on the tarmac at night, board an identified vehicle and give a precise address.
Can you pay by card in Antananarivo? +
Very partially. International-grade hotels, a few upscale restos and one or two supermarkets in Ivandry accept Visa and Mastercard. Everything else, taxis included, runs on cash. ATMs in Analakely and Ivandry, common cap of 400,000 MGA per withdrawal, plan for multiple visits.
