Adapt by season

Austral winter for the volcano and the cirques

Over 14 days across two islands, the season counts double. The austral winter (May to October) is dry and mild: the prime time to hike on Réunion (cirques, Piton de la Fournaise) and explore Mauritius, with clear mountain skies. The austral summer (November to April) is hot and lush, perfect for the Mauritian lagoons, but Réunion's trails are often in cloud by afternoon and a cyclone risk exists from mid-December to February. For the combo, aim for May to October.

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • • In July 2025 I kept Piton de la Fournaise for a dawn start: at 6:30am the Plaine des Sables was bathed in raking light and the crater was clear, while by midday everything was in cloud. On the volcano, always set off very early.
  • • Do Mauritius first (beach, rest) then Réunion (hiking, volcano): the gentle-then-effort order works better.
  • • Book the inter-island flight early: Air Mauritius and Air Austral fill up in school holidays.
  • • The road of 400 bends to Cilaos, spectacular, to do in daylight.
  • • Sleep near the volcano (Bourg-Murat) for the early start to the crater.

⚠️ Would change

  • • Do not underestimate Réunion's roads: everything is slow in the mountains, allow plenty of time.
  • • In austral summer the volcano is often in cloud: aim for the austral winter.
  • • Add the Mafate cirque (on foot or by helicopter only) if you have an extra day.

Do I need a visa for Mauritius and Réunion? +
Mauritius: a free tourist permit on arrival up to 90 days for French and EU citizens. Réunion is a French department, so no visa or special formality for French travellers: it is France.
How long is the flight between the two islands? +
Just 45 minutes. Air Mauritius and Air Austral run several flights a day between Mauritius and Saint-Denis (Roland-Garros), from ~€120 one way.
When is the best time for the combo? +
May to October (austral winter): dry and clear to hike on Réunion and explore Mauritius. The austral summer floods the Mauritian lagoons with warmth but drowns Réunion's trails in cloud.
Do you drive on the same side on both islands? +
No. You drive on the left in Mauritius (British legacy) and on the right in Réunion (France). Allow time to adapt after the inter-island flight.
Do you need to be fit for Réunion? +
Piton de la Fournaise takes a good half-day of walking. Cilaos and the waterfalls offer shorter strolls. It can be adapted: the car gives access to many viewpoints without hiking.
What budget for two weeks? +
Allow €2,600 to €3,900 per person including flights at comfort level, two cars and the inter-island flight included. As Réunion is in France, prices there are mainland-level.
