In brief
Sleep in a medina riad
A courtyard house hidden behind a studded door. Calm inside, medina at the doorstep. Charming riads from €40/night.
Book Jardin Majorelle online
170 MAD (€17) for the garden, 230 MAD with the Berber Museum. Timed slot required, book 48 hours ahead in high season.
Save Jemaa el-Fna for sunset
The square transforms at dusk: storytellers, Gnaoua musicians, orange juice stalls at 5 MAD. Best views from the café terraces above.
Haggle at 40-50% of the asking price
It's the game and it should be done with a smile. Stay standing, keep an exit, never look too keen.
Petit taxi: insist on the meter
Beige petit taxis run on a meter (10-30 MAD in town). By day, refuse inflated flat fares; look for the meter button as you get in.
Must-see
UNESCO oral heritage. Storytellers, snake charmers and stalls by day, giant food court by night.
Babouches, hammered metal lamps, spices, Berber rugs. Allow 2 to 3 hours to get lost without pressure.
19th-century palace with zellige courtyards and painted ceilings. The most accessible of Marrakech's palaces.
The Majorelle blue created by Jacques Majorelle, bought and restored by Yves Saint Laurent. Bamboo grove and cacti.
The 12th-century Almohad minaret, visible from across the city. Exterior only, interior reserved for Muslims.
14th-century Quranic school, reopened in 2022 after restoration. Zellige courtyard, student cells upstairs.
Mausoleum of Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour, rediscovered in 1917. Hall of twelve Carrara marble columns.
The former Jewish quarter, its quieter lanes and the city's most photogenic spice market.
The ritual: steam, black-soap scrub, rinse. About 1 hour. Local hammams 50 MAD, visitor hammams 250-600 MAD.
1 h away: green valley, Berber villages and waterfalls. Ideal in summer to escape the heat.
