In brief

Marrakech in brief

  • 1

    Sleep in a medina riad

A courtyard house hidden behind a studded door. Calm inside, medina at the doorstep. Charming riads from €40/night.

  • 2

    Book Jardin Majorelle online

170 MAD (€17) for the garden, 230 MAD with the Berber Museum. Timed slot required, book 48 hours ahead in high season.

  • 3

    Save Jemaa el-Fna for sunset

The square transforms at dusk: storytellers, Gnaoua musicians, orange juice stalls at 5 MAD. Best views from the café terraces above.

  • 4

Haggle at 40-50% of the asking price

It's the game and it should be done with a smile. Stay standing, keep an exit, never look too keen.

  • 5

Petit taxi: insist on the meter

Beige petit taxis run on a meter (10-30 MAD in town). By day, refuse inflated flat fares; look for the meter button as you get in.

FAQ

Marrakech FAQ

How many days to visit Marrakech? +
Two days cover the medina, palaces, Jemaa el-Fna and a hammam. A third day lets you escape to the Ourika Valley, Essaouira or the Ouzoud falls. Three to four days to breathe between sights and enjoy a riad.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in Marrakech? +
The medina for immersion: hidden riads, lanes, walking distance to Jemaa el-Fna. Gueliz for a more modern stay with cafés and galleries. Hivernage for calm, pools and easy taxi access to the medina.
Should you haggle in the souks? +
Yes, it's expected and part of the culture. Start between 40 and 50% of the asking price, stay friendly, never show an obvious crush. Remember that walking away is a normal step of the negotiation.
Is Marrakech safe for travelers? +
Yes overall. Main risks are pickpockets in the medina, fake guides and airport-taxi scams. Pre-booking your airport transfer, declining spontaneous guides and insisting on petit-taxi meters handles 90% of issues.
When to avoid Marrakech? +
July and August, 38 to 42°C by day, the city nearly grinds to a halt in the afternoon. Ramadan also shifts hours (restaurants closed in daytime, a slower mood). Check the current Ramadan window before booking.
Do you need a visa for Marrakech? +
No for French and EU nationals: 90 days visa-free with a passport valid six months after entry. See our [Morocco visa guide](/en/destinations/morocco/practical/visa-morocco/) for other nationalities.
