In brief

Queenstown in brief

  • 1

    Book accommodation very early

Small town, huge demand: Queenstown posts the country's highest nightly rates in February and through the July-August ski season. Plan 2 to 3 months ahead.

  • 2

    Milford Sound = a 12-13 hour day

Count 4h30 to 5 h by coach each way plus a 1h45 cruise. Departures around 7am. The alternative: sleep in Te Anau to split the drive in two.

  • 3

Bungy needs booking, especially in summer

Kawarau Bridge (43 m, the original 1988 jump) costs NZ$235. The Nevis (134 m) runs ~NZ$315. Morning slots are quieter, shuttles from the centre included.

  • 4

    Ski from June to September

The Remarkables and Coronet Peak sit 35-45 min from town, day pass ~NZ$169. Renting gear in town is cheaper than on the mountain.

  • 5

Fergburger: yes, the queue is worth it

The Shotover Street burger institution runs almost around the clock. Tip: order by phone and collect without waiting, or aim for 3-5pm.

FAQ

Queenstown FAQ

How many days do you need in Queenstown? +
Three days for the town, a Milford Sound day and one adrenaline block (bungy or jet boat). Four days to add Arrowtown, the wineries or a proper hike. Skiers plan a week combining the Remarkables, Coronet Peak and, with a car, Cardrona on the Wanaka side.
Is a Milford Sound day trip from Queenstown worth it? +
Yes if you only have one slot: the road itself is spectacular and the coaches (12-13 h return, from ~NZ$200 cruise included) spare you the driving fatigue. More comfortable: sleep in Te Anau (2 h from Queenstown) and drive the Milford Road at first light. Faster: a scenic flight, from ~NZ$500.
How much is bungy jumping in Queenstown? +
Kawarau Bridge, the historic 43 m jump, costs NZ$235 (about €129) with the shuttle from town included. The Nevis, 134 m and 8.5 seconds of free fall, runs about NZ$315. Photos and videos cost extra. Book online, especially December to February.
When can you ski in Queenstown? +
June to September, with the best cover in July-August. The Remarkables (varied terrain, freestyle) and Coronet Peak (long runs, night skiing Fri-Sat) are 35-45 min away, day pass around NZ$169. The town becomes the southern hemisphere's après-ski capital; book accommodation weeks ahead.
Can you visit Queenstown without a car? +
Yes for the essentials: the centre works on foot, Orbus buses cover Frankton and Arrowtown, and every activity (bungy, Milford, ski) includes or offers a shuttle. A car only becomes useful for Glenorchy, Wanaka and touring wineries at your own pace.
Is Queenstown expensive? +
It's New Zealand's priciest town alongside Auckland: count €90 a day backpacking and over €200 in comfort, before activities (one big activity = NZ$100-300). Classic savings: cook at the hostel, sleep in Frankton, bundle activities into combos (Awesome Foursome ~NZ$599).
Do you need a visa for New Zealand? +
No visa for most European passport holders for stays up to 3 months, but you need the NZeTA (NZ$17 via the app, NZ$23 online) plus the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy, paid together before departure. See our [New Zealand visa guide](/en/destinations/new-zealand/practical/visa-new-zealand/).
