Geysers, boiling mud pools and living Māori culture, Rotorua packs the best of the North Island around a volcanic lake. Yes, it smells of sulphur. No, it doesn't spoil a thing. Here's how to enjoy 2 or 3 days.

In brief
NZeTA + IVL before departure
The NZeTA costs NZ$17 via the app (NZ$23 online) and comes with the NZ$100 International Visitor Levy, paid together. Budget ~NZ$120 per person, valid 2 years.
Yes, it smells of boiled egg. You adjust within the hour
Hydrogen sulphide seeping from the ground earned Rotorua the nickname 'Sulphur City'. The smell surprises on arrival then fades from awareness. Locals stopped noticing years ago.
Book the Māori evening ahead
Earth-cooked hangi, haka and song: Te Pā Tū (NZ$260, the most immersive) and Mitai (~NZ$150) sell out days ahead in summer.
Lady Knox erupts at 10:15am sharp
At Wai-O-Tapu the geyser is triggered each morning at a fixed time. Arrive at opening, watch Lady Knox, then hit the Champagne Pool before the tour buses.
End your days in a geothermal spa
The Polynesian Spa lines up 28 mineral pools facing the lake (from NZ$34). The local ritual after a day of walking, especially in the southern winter.
Must-see
Pōhutu shoots up to 30 m, once or twice an hour. Also on site: the national Māori carving school and a kiwi enclosure.
The steaming orange Champagne Pool, the neon-green Devil's Bath and the Lady Knox geyser triggered at 10:15am. 27 km south.
Pōwhiri welcome, songs, haka and a hangi dinner steamed underground. Te Pā Tū for immersion, Mitai for the classic format.
28 alkaline and acidic geothermal pools facing Lake Rotorua. The Deluxe lakefront pools are worth the upgrade.
28 suspension bridges through giant redwoods planted in 1901. The Nightlights version after dark glows with David Trubridge lanterns.
The world's youngest geothermal valley, born of the 1886 Tarawera eruption. Walk down to the lake, shuttle back up.
An inhabited Māori village amid the steam vents: families have cooked in the hot springs for generations. Tours guided by residents.
The mock-Tudor museum, croquet lawns and the lake promenade with its gulls and black swans. Rotorua's elegant past.
The public park where the earth steams for free: mud pools, boiling lakes behind fences and open-access hot foot baths.
The Lord of the Rings film set is a 1-hour drive away, near Matamata. 2-hour guided tour, drink at the Green Dragon Inn included.

Getting around
Rental car
Near-essential: Wai-O-Tapu (27 km), Waimangu (25 km) and Hobbiton (60 km) lie outside town. Left-hand driving, easy roads.
Baybus city buses
Local network covering the centre, the Redwoods and Ngongotahā. Pay by Bee card or contactless. Fine in town, not enough for the southern geothermal sites.
Shuttles & tours
Without a car, combined shuttles (Wai-O-Tapu + Waimangu) and guided tours from the centre fill the gaps. Book the day before.
On foot
The centre crosses in 20 minutes: lakefront, Eat Streat, Government Gardens and Kuirau Park link up without a vehicle.
