In brief

Muscat in brief

  • 1

    A human-scale capital

Count 2 days for the must-sees (mosque, souq, forts), 3 days to add an excursion to the wadis.

  • 2

    Low, white architecture by law

No skyscrapers here: buildings rarely exceed nine floors, in light tones imposed by regulation.

  • 3

    Renting a car changes everything

Muscat stretches over dozens of kilometers and Oman is best lived as a road trip. The car remains the best choice.

  • 4

Proper dress required at the mosque

Shoulders, arms and knees covered, headscarf for women. Visit in the morning only (8am to 11am, except Friday).

  • 5

The best window runs October to April

Summer often tops 40ยฐC. The cool season stays mild, sunny and ideal for exploring.
