In brief
Acclimatize before stacking up visits
Cusco sits at 3,399 m. Take a calm first day, hydrate, sip coca tea, skip treks and heavy drinking. Best move: sleep first in the Sacred Valley (2,800 m), which is lower.
Buy the boleto turístico on arrival
130 PEN (~$35) for 16 sites over 10 days, including Sacsayhuamán, Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Partial version 70 PEN. Without it, no access to the major ruins.
Stay in San Blas or around the Plaza de Armas
San Blas for artisan lanes and rooftop views, the center to do everything on foot. Mind the slopes: every street climbs, and at 3,400 m it shows.
Book Machu Picchu before booking Cusco
Citadel tickets (strict quotas) dictate every date of the trip. Lock ticket plus train first, then build the Cusco and Sacred Valley days around them.
Cusco is a destination in its own right
Qorikancha, the cathedral, San Pedro market, museums: the city deserves 2 full days beyond its role as base camp for Machu Picchu.
Must-see
The colonial heart built over the Inca ceremonial square. A cathedral holding 400 Cusco School paintings, including a Last Supper with roast guinea pig.
The Inca Temple of the Sun, once sheathed in gold, topped by the Santo Domingo convent. The city's finest example of flawless Inca walls.
Ceremonial fortress of 100-ton blocks fitted to the millimeter, on the hill above town. A 30-minute walk up from the plaza.
Steep cobbled lanes, artisan workshops, blue balconies and terrace cafés. The San Blas viewpoint takes in the whole city.
Fresh juices, highland cheeses, potato stalls by the dozen varieties. Local counter lunch for 8-12 PEN.
Spectacular Inca terraces above a market village. 1 h by colectivo, the classic first stop in the Sacred Valley.
Stepped fortress and an Inca village continuously inhabited since the 15th century. Also the train station for Machu Picchu.
An Inca agricultural lab of circular terraces and 3,000 salt ponds clinging to the mountainside. Half-day combo by tour or taxi.
An ochre-striped mineral ridge at 5,036 m. 4am start, a 1h30 high-altitude walk: only once properly acclimatized.
3,000 years of ceramics and goldwork displayed as artworks, inside a colonial mansion on Plaza Nazarenas.
