How to get around
A month lets you cover the whole mainland by car (from the Douro to the Algarve) then reach the Azores by plane. Plan two to three flights (mainland → São Miguel → Faial) and a rental car per zone. Around €600 of transport excluding the international flight over 30 days.
Car on the mainland
€30-50/day · Douro, centre, Alentejo, Algarve
Flight mainland → São Miguel
~€80 · TAP or Azores Airlines · 2h15
Inter-island flight São Miguel → Faial
~€70 · short Azores Airlines hops
Ferry Faial → Pico
~€4 · 30 min · frequent service
Cars in the Azores
€30-45/day · one per island visited
Adapt by season
Mainland Portugal is at its best from May to September. The Azores, out in the Atlantic, have a more changeable climate: June to September bring the most sun and the best whale watching (April to October). This itinerary ends in the Azores: at the height of summer the mainland can be hot in the south, so use the islands' cool Atlantic to finish. Avoid winter for the Azores, often rainy.
