How to get around

Itinerary logistics

A month lets you cover the whole mainland by car (from the Douro to the Algarve) then reach the Azores by plane. Plan two to three flights (mainland → São Miguel → Faial) and a rental car per zone. Around €600 of transport excluding the international flight over 30 days.

Car on the mainland

✈️

Flight mainland → São Miguel

~€80 · TAP or Azores Airlines · 2h15

✈️

Inter-island flight São Miguel → Faial

~€70 · short Azores Airlines hops

⛴️

Ferry Faial → Pico

~€4 · 30 min · frequent service

🚗

Cars in the Azores

€30-45/day · one per island visited

Adapt by season

Mainland is dry, the Azores depend on the month

Mainland Portugal is at its best from May to September. The Azores, out in the Atlantic, have a more changeable climate: June to September bring the most sun and the best whale watching (April to October). This itinerary ends in the Azores: at the height of summer the mainland can be hot in the south, so use the islands' cool Atlantic to finish. Avoid winter for the Azores, often rainy.

Author tips

What I would redo (and change)

✅ Would redo

  • In July 2024, the 9am whale trip out of Lagos met a pod of sperm whales 20 minutes from the harbour: an unforgettable morning, and a calmer sea than in the afternoon.
  • Keep the Azores for the end: after the hot mainland, the islands' cool Atlantic feels like another trip.
  • Sleep one night in a Douro quinta and another on the wild Vicentine coast.
  • Climb Pico at dawn for the sea of clouds below the summit.

⚠️ Would change

  • Trim the Algarve to 4 days if you would rather have more time in the Azores.
  • Add Terceira (Azores) if you have two extra days.
  • On the mainland, skip Coimbra in favour of Tomar and Óbidos if time is short.
  • In winter, skip the Azores (frequent rain) and stay on the mainland.

FAQ

Itinerary FAQ

A month in Portugal, isn't that too long? +
No, it is the format that reveals the country beyond the mainland: the wine north, the cities, the Alentejo, the Algarve and the Azores, with real breaks and a total change of scene in the Atlantic.
Are the Azores worth it on a month-long trip? +
Yes: volcanoes, crater lakes, hot springs and whale watching. Plan a 2h15 flight from the mainland and 9 days for São Miguel, Faial and Pico.
How many flights should you plan? +
Two to three: mainland → São Miguel, then São Miguel → Faial, plus the return. On the mainland, everything is done by rental car, zone by zone.
What budget for 30 days? +
Budget around €2,800 as a backpacker, €3,700 in comfort and €5,800 or more in premium, flight from Paris included, per person.
What is the best time for this grand tour? +
June to September: a dry mainland, sunny Azores and whales on cue. Avoid winter for the islands, often rainy.
Do you need a car per island in the Azores? +
Yes, one rental per island visited. Public transport is rare there and the sites (craters, springs, viewpoints) are scattered. Budget €30-45/day per car.
