In brief

Porto in brief

  • 1

A compact city, but it climbs

Count 2 days for the Ribeira, Gaia and the center. 3 days to add a day in the Douro valley.

  • 2

Choosing the right neighborhood changes everything

Ribeira for the postcard, Baixa for the central location, Gaia for the cellars and the view.

  • 3

    Prefer walking and the metro

The center is best on foot, but the alleys climb hard. The metro links the airport and Gaia effortlessly.

  • 4

Port wine is best tasted on the Gaia bank

Historic Sandeman, Graham's, Taylor's cellars. Tastings from €15, views over the city.

  • 5

A city of azulejos and granite

Sao Bento station, Almas chapel, Lello bookshop: the scenery is everywhere, often free.

FAQ

Porto FAQ

How many days to visit Porto? +
Two days are enough for the must-sees (Ribeira, Dom Luis I bridge, Gaia cellars, Sao Bento station, Lello bookshop). Count a third day for a trip to the Douro valley or to Guimaraes.
What's the best neighborhood to stay in Porto? +
The Ribeira for the riverside scenery. Baixa and Aliados for the central location and transport. Vila Nova de Gaia for the view over the city and proximity to the cellars.
Where to taste port wine? +
On the Vila Nova de Gaia bank, where the historic cellars are concentrated (Sandeman, Graham's, Taylor's). Expect €15 to €30 for a guided tour with a tasting of several ports.
Do you need a visa for Porto? +
No for French nationals: Portugal is in the Schengen Area. See our Portugal entry requirements guide.
Porto or Lisbon, which city to choose? +
Porto is more compact, more intimate and centered on wine and the Douro. Lisbon is larger, livelier and gives access to Sintra and the ocean. The two are linked by a 3h train, so the ideal is to combine both.
