FAQ

Kruger FAQ

Self-drive or guided lodge in Kruger? +
Kruger is the only major African park where self-drive is encouraged and part of the experience. SANParks (Skukuza, Lower Sabie) at €80-180/day offers real freedom for independent travelers. Sabi Sands (€800-3,000/night) in a private reserve guarantees premium sightings (leopards, off-road, night drives) with expert rangers. Ideal mix: 2 nights SANParks + 2 nights Sabi Sands.
How much is Kruger entry in 2026? +
2026 SANParks conservation fee: ~R460 (~€25) per day per person for international visitors. Pay at every entry or via an annual Wild Card (~R3,000) if planning multiple trips. Sabi Sands bundles its concession fee into the lodge rate (no separate payment).
Best time for Kruger? +
May to September (dry austral winter): wildlife at waterholes, low vegetation, clear skies, no active malaria. Peak quality June-August. December-March (humid summer): greenery, births, migrant birds, but tall scrub and moderate malaria risk. October and April are excellent shoulders.
Is Kruger dangerous for travelers? +
No, Kruger is one of the best-managed parks in the world. Rules: never leave the vehicle except at rest camps or picnic sites, respect gate hours (entry 5:30/6am, exit 6/6:30pm by season). Main risks: malaria in wet season (prophylaxis), buffalo near camp on foot. Excellent human-security record.
Do you need a visa for Kruger? +
No for French and most EU travelers: 90 days visa-free in South Africa with a passport valid 30 days past planned exit, 2 blank pages minimum. See our [South Africa visa guide](/en/destinations/south-africa/practical/visa-south-africa/) for other nationalities.
How to combine Kruger and Cape Town? +
Classic 12-14 day itinerary: 3 nights Cape Town + Garden Route (5-7 days) + flight to Kruger + 4 nights park. Or reverse to end on the beach. SA Airlink or Airlink internal flights Joburg-Skukuza ~$250 round trip, Joburg-Cape Town ~$200 round trip. No direct CPT-Kruger flight, Joburg layover mandatory.
