Self-drive unique in safari Africa
Kruger allows individual driving inside the park, a normal rental works (paved roads and well-graded tracks). Total freedom, ~R460/person/day conservation fee.
Affordable SANParks rest camps
Network of Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Satara, Olifants, Letaba, Pretoriuskop: chalets, bungalows, campsites. 600-2,500 ZAR a night for 2, book 6 months ahead on sanparks.org.
Sabi Sands for luxury and guiding quality
Unfenced private reserves bordering Kruger, off-road allowed, night drives, walking safaris. Record leopard density. €800-3,000 a night all in.
Gates open 5:30-6am, close 6-6:30pm
Strict seasonal hours. Most popular entry gates: Phabeni, Numbi, Paul Kruger, Crocodile Bridge (south). Book the time slot on your entry permit.
Combine Kruger + Panorama Route
On the way to or from Joburg, the Panorama Route (Blyde River Canyon, God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes) adds 2 days of spectacular highland scenery.
Must-see
Lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, rhinos. Kruger holds the Big Five in high density, especially in the south (Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Crocodile Bridge).
The only major safari park in Africa where solo driving is encouraged. Standard rental car, paved roads and signed tracks, maps sold at the gates.
