Our analysis
In January, Thailand splits in two. The Andaman South takes the lead: between Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta the sea is flat, the water sits around 29°C and underwater visibility reaches 30 metres at the Similans. The North enjoys air that is rare the rest of the year: dry, clear, cool at dawn. Bangkok, finally, becomes walkable, at 28-32°C rather than 40°C in spring.
One tip few guides give: skip Koh Phi Phi between 11am and 3pm, when the Phuket boats drop their groups at Maya Bay. Sleep one night on the island and turn up at 8am, and you will have the bay almost to yourself.
One caveat: the Gulf. Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are ending their wet season and still see five to eight rainy days in January, with a sea that can turn choppy. For a pure beach trip, the Andaman stays the safest bet.
