In brief
The balloon flight is the signature experience
Take-off before dawn, 1h in the air above the fairy chimneys. Count €150 to €250 depending on the operator.
Book several spare mornings
Flights depend on the weather and are cancelled if the wind picks up. Plan at least two sunrises on site.
Göreme is the ideal base
The village concentrates cave hotels, agencies and the UNESCO open-air museum. Ürgüp and Uçhisar are quieter.
A car makes everything easier
The sites are scattered. Rental, shuttle or organised tour depending on your pace and budget.
Sleep in a cave room
Cave hotels carved into the tuff are the region's other signature. Book early in high season.
Must-see

UNESCO site: rock-cut monasteries and churches decorated with Byzantine frescoes.
Tuff columns capped with basalt. Pasabag and Love Valley are the finest.
City dug over 8 levels, up to 60m deep. A refuge for thousands of inhabitants.
Wider than Derinkuyu: galleries, stables and rock-cut wine cellars.
The region's highest point, a tuff fortress riddled with tunnels. 360° view.
Trails between ochre cliffs and hidden churches. Magical at sunset.
Green 14km canyon along a river, dotted with rock-cut churches.
Sleep in a room carved into the rock, terrace facing the balloons.
The most photogenic fairy chimneys, with double and triple caps.
