In brief

Los Angeles in brief

  • 1

    Rent a car, seriously

L.A. stretches 50 miles east to west. Count $40-70/day plus parking ($10-25 an evening). The metro exists ($1.75 a ride) but only covers Downtown-Hollywood-Santa Monica well.

  • 2

    Getty Center: free, parking $25

The hilltop museum in Brentwood only charges for parking ($15 after 3pm). Collections, gardens and a view over the whole city: the best cultural deal in L.A.

  • 3

    Griffith Observatory at sunset

Entry and telescopes free, planetarium $10. Arrive an hour before sunset: the Hollywood sign, ocean and Downtown light up at once. Parking is scarce, consider the DASH bus.

  • 4

Universal Studios: book dated tickets online

One-day tickets are date-priced, from about $109. Arrive at opening and do the Studio Tour first; the line passes an hour by 11am.

  • 5

Count distances in minutes, not miles

Santa Monica to Hollywood: 45 minutes to 1h30 depending on the hour. Grouping sights by zone (coast, Hollywood, Downtown) saves 2 hours of driving a day.

FAQ

Los Angeles FAQ

Do you need a car in Los Angeles? +
Yes, to enjoy the whole city: Malibu, the Getty, the hills and evening drives don't work without one. Possible exception: a short stay based in Santa Monica or Downtown, mixing the E line, a bike and Uber. But 3 days without a car means a third of the city.
How many days do you need in Los Angeles? +
Three full days for the coast, Hollywood-Griffith and Downtown-Getty. Four or five to add Universal Studios or Disneyland, each of which eats an entire day. With two days, skip Downtown and combine coast + Griffith.
Which neighborhood should you stay in? +
Santa Monica if the budget allows: beach, restaurants and evenings on foot. West Hollywood for the central position and nightlife. Hollywood or Downtown for tighter budgets with metro access. Don't sleep near LAX except for a transit night: it's 40 minutes from everything.
Is Los Angeles safe for travelers? +
Tourist zones are safe by day. At night, avoid Skid Row in Downtown (around 5th and San Pedro) and the fringes of the Venice boardwalk. Never leave anything visible in the car: smashed windows are the number one visitor incident.
Universal Studios or Disneyland? +
Universal for film fans and teenagers: a one-of-a-kind Studio Tour, Harry Potter, Nintendo. Disneyland for families with kids under 10 and the nostalgia of Walt's original park. Doing both takes 2 days and roughly $250 in tickets.
What daily budget for Los Angeles? +
About €100 backpacker-style (hostel, tacos, metro and free beaches), €260 in comfort with a rental car and 3* hotel, and over €550 premium around Santa Monica or Beverly Hills. Parking and tips (18-20%) inflate the bill fast.
Do you need an ESTA for Los Angeles? +
Yes, as for any US entry: $40 since September 2025, applied for online on the official site at least 72 hours before the flight, valid 2 years. See our [United States entry guide](/en/destinations/united-states/practical/visa-usa/).
When should you visit Los Angeles? +
March to May and September to November: clear skies, 20-28°C, swimmable ocean in early fall. In June the marine layer (June gloom) veils the coast until noon. Winter stays mild (15-20°C) with some rain between December and February.
